I am not doing any of the things I should be doing. Then there's the deflatable pancakes incident from this morning. They poofed up on the griddle, and promptly collapsed upon removal. Very disheartening.

My mom is mad at me because I do not wish to allow her to force some sort of birthday celebration on me that she wants for my birthday. What I want for my birthday does not include fake 1950/60's sentiment and trappings and at least 2 hours of my life dancing through someone else's uncomfortable hoops and spent making someone else happy. It's my gd birthday. #momzilla

Not an area of science anybody spends much time or money on. There's a perception and understanding gap as to why a sense of taste would have anything to do with survival or quality of life.
Why is it that I slept more last night, and feel worse this morning? Bodies, man.

Ok, folks.

Ok, folks. They have said this for a while, now. Zika is sexually transmissable. They have said that many people do not become symptomatic. They have said that you should not have unprotected sex with someone who has been to an active area of Zika. I know that people hear this as you only have to worry if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant, BUT: 1) People get pregnant whether they want to, or not. Even on birth control. Surprise! 2) You can get sick from Zika, and some people have bad complications. I don't know how you express this in a way that registers with people so that they take action. If you or your partner have been somewhere with active Zika cases Use A Condom. And I just know that because we live in a culture where sex is icky and you can't say those things on TV people will come to the wrong conclusions, ALL forms of sexual activity, ALL intimate contact with body fluids. This includes sex toys - CDC has this spelled out on their website. Ok? And for th...

But mostly, root cause analysis has identified the lying as a critical factor in my deepening anger. I, uh, seem to have an ethics problem. Yup, that's it. The problem is my ethics. Silly me.

- mild lock - This article is about 8 months old. It is about cancer, and reporting on cancer, and having cancer. (I say this so as not to potentially surprise trigger someone.) I have reasons for posting this now. Unsurprisingly, it is written by a cancer survivor who is in remission. There are a couple of things that stand out in it for me, but I will highlight just this one: Those of us who become cancer survivors don't live on because we fought bravely; those of us who die from cancer don't perish because we didn't fight bravely enough. The links from and about Lisa Bonchek Adams in the article are also very worth reading. http://www.npr.org/sections/13.7/2015/12/07/458824962/why-cancer-is-gone-discourse-doesn-t-help-cancer-patients?utm_campaign=storyshare&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_medium=social http://www.npr.org/sections/13.7/2015/12/07/458824962/why-cancer-is-gone-discourse-doesn-t-help-cancer-patients?utm_campaign=storyshare&utm_source=twitter.com&u...

Hi.

Hi. I am busy being silently inarticulately rageful at my mom. What were all those recommendations about how to keep your blood pressure and stomach acid levels down when dealing with relatives who adamantly believed crazy things in contravention of all evidence to the contrary? Relatives with absolutely no knowledge or expertise "because they read it/heard it somewhere it must be true"? I know that was about politics and social issues, but it's directly applicable to health and science over here. I want to punch things.

Shkreli is back.

Shkreli is back. Yes, he's a [insert epithets here]. I imagine he's a bit of a thorn in the side of his own industry, too, because he seems to need to talk in public. Privileged, entitled jerk whose ethics seem to be defined as: I have it, if you want it you pay me what I want or you die. He seems to think this is how all business should be done. His industry seems to agree with him. I don't remember that bit in "Wealth of Nations" but it's been a while since I read it. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/epipen-price-hike-senator-amy-klobuchar-charles-grassley-martin-shkreli/ http://www.cbsnews.com/news/epipen-price-hike-senator-amy-klobuchar-charles-grassley-martin-shkreli

Soooo

Soooo ... I only ever saw one or two stories pointing out how weird it was that if they were concerned about public perception in an international situation that the police magically immediately resolved the situation and made sure everyone knew that Brazil was safe and the swimmers were drunken bros. Gee, why don't they do the same for their own citizens who report crimes, those few stories wondered? Now, it turns out that the swimmers, while still probably drunken bros, were not only not necessarily lying, you could quite possibly call this robbery and extortion. Nice. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/doubt-cast-on-brazils-version-of-u-s-swimmers-rio-incident/ http://www.cbsnews.com/news/doubt-cast-on-brazils-version-of-u-s-swimmers-rio-incident

Victorian concepts of gender and humanity are out, again.

Victorian concepts of gender and humanity are out, again. I get why everyone thought they were  being 'fair', and whatnot, but modern science has moved on a bit and if athletes' own bodies are doing this, they aren't doping, then get over it. Hyperandrogenism has not suddenly made all "those" people the exclusive gold-medalists. This is bad form and ignorance combined. I'm particularly disgusted that athletes were actually pressured into taking hormone suppressing medications and undergoing internal and external surgical mutilation. Because that has no potential larger and longer term implications for their health and well-being. This is also chauvinism. They don't 'look' girly enough. Neither, it seems, does Serena Williams, who looks like an athlete and got less endorsements than some world-class but more girly looking tennis players. In addition to being racist, because darker skinned people from not the right parts of the world. And, oh, m...

I know about Gullah-Geechee culture because I was interested in Gershwin and the back story to Porgy and Bess . I had hoped someday to visit and learn more about and experience some of the culture first hand. It's also a living link with critically important American history and culture. I had no idea how bad this situation was. Notwithstanding the involvement of some people with ties to the community, this smacks very strongly to me of white privilege. I mean, Jesus of Nazareth, people. They're calling some of the developments "plantations"! In South Carolina, for the love of little fishes. This isn't irony, it's offensive. Where are all the people who jump up and try to preserve our country's historical treasures? I know just by writing this I'm also exercising privilege, but I find it so disturbing that there isn't a public hue and cry to preserve this. (Which I think could be done without completely shutting off all development and progress, bt...

She's found it so helpful! - That was after the book, though. Something about healing or I don't know what. - And now she's texting me did I know medical marijuana was legal in NY?!? (P.S. It's sort of legal but not like she thinks.) She may annoy the byproducts of digestion out of me, but she isn't stupid. More on the Great Adrenalin Rip-off -

More on the Great Adrenalin Rip-off - This is a decent article with info on the attempts at alternatives. Although, again, and I say this as someone who had to learn how to deal with anaphylaxis as a child, I strongly disagree with the doomsayers about having to use something prefilled that is a syringe, not an auto-injector like the epi-pen. It's not as quick or as reliable, but if you really look, guess what, sometimes the epi-pens don't work or aren't used properly, either. It's rare, but it isn't infallible. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/24/upshot/the-epipen-a-case-study-in-health-care-system-dysfunction.html?_r=0 http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/24/upshot/the-epipen-a-case-study-in-health-care-system-dysfunction.html?_r=0

Ok, so the real headline says, "Rare Zika Complication Hits 30 in Puerto Rico; CDC Expects More." They are talking about Guillain-Barre Syndrome http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/guillain-barre-syndrome/basics/definition/con-20025832 . It's a neurological condition that can affect adults and lead to paralysis and can be serious. There was a reported spike in Guillain-Barre in French Polynesia during the 2013-2014 Zika outbreak. There has been an approximately 4 times higher rate of Guillain-Barre associated with the Zika outbreak in Brazil. It has clearly shown up in Puerto Rico. It struck me that a number of places are pretty cavalier about oh, people recover and there's just some numbness or tingling or weakness; it's fine. Then I looked it up. There's a paper from 2014 talking about how the few studies of long-term QOL (quality of life) for Guillain-Barre patients are poor quality, and there's a need for more research. Then there's the p...

This is why people think drug companies are jerks (insert enhancing descriptions if you like).

This is why people think drug companies are jerks (insert enhancing descriptions if you like). Depending on where you look, there's maybe $1 worth of drug inside each epi-pen. Maybe. It is beyond my comprehension that the device itself is still under patent, since I'm still pretty sure this is something developed for the military for anti-chemical weapons drug self-admin on the battlefield back in the 70's or before. However, maybe you can tweak some small meaningless thing and re-up or get a new patent and that's how it's been extended. Whatever it is, there is no way on god's green earth that it costs hundreds of dollars for cheap plastic. Lastly, this particular article makes it sound like it would be terrible if people had to use "DIY" syringes. Newsflash, until the 1980's, when the switchover to epi-pens became a thing, everyone used syringes. Either you had ampoules of adrenalin (epinephrine) and syringes like insulin syringes, or you had an ...

Public health, folks.

Public health, folks. They had a plan in place; it didn't get executed properly. According to this it takes 18 months to manufacture the vaccine. And it's much more exciting to worry about the new diseases on the block, because we're inured to the continued threat of older diseases. I suspect it is also not helpful that central Africa is regarded as a sort of black hole of chaos, so mostly Western society tries to pretend it isn't there. Unless we're exploiting their resources. Because we convinced ourselves we had it covered, we stopped further development on things like yellow fever vaccine. Besides, what we had worked. Problem is, it is like many things that are quiet until they explode. You don't need vaccine until you need a lot of it. We would still have been ok if it had been used properly, but you're asking for that in a region that is generally unstable. Meanwhile, someone had tried to move from literal grow it in a chicken egg to cell culture based...

#gendered Yes, questioning her health by saying she's tired, or weak, or etc. is dog whistling the stereotype that females are physically and otherwise constitutionally weaker than males. I'm a bully, I'm robust! Oh, well, you must be a better provider, then. Once upon a time, older citizens, and specifically older women, were considered a valuable commodity for their experience and accumulated knowledge, skills, and hopefully wisdom. In general, though, our society doesn't respect intellect. And physicality is equated with being male. She's female, she's weak, she can't handle it. Horse hockey. * GASP * Google plus says I did not tell you about the arepas! I gather there can be many versions. This one is large, messily dripping with juice, crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside, and is served with some kind of spicy red sauce. As you can see, there is much meat. The arepa itself is made of ground corn meal/flour. If you'd had one, this picture would be causing you to salivate. Oh, and there's black beans. I kid. The black beans were also super tasty and delicious and well cooked without being smooshy. Would eat again. This place seriously overfeeds you for very little money. I'm not sure if it is good or bad that it is down in a borderline sketchy industrial neighborhood right by the highway and the river.

I might have shared about this place before?

Image
I might have shared about this place before? It serves Venezuelan street food. On the left is a Venezuelan empanada. Delicious. With this ubiquitous green sauce that is tangy and mayonnaisey and I don't know what it is but it is addictive. The other dish is patacon. It is a sandwich with discs of fried, smooshed, green (unripe) plantain instead of bread. OMG. It is juicy, drippy, meaty insanity with some veggies and sauce on it. It's super messy and probably way more calories than bread. Who cares? Also, I don't think they do small portions of anything in this place. It's kind of too much, really, but it's super tasty and delicious. I have to see if I posted way back when about the arepas. Because the arepas. Seriously.

I've been quite behind with posting. Given a bit of a boost by someone else's post. This is from this year's cherry picking. There's at least 4 kinds of cherries in there: rainier, montmorency (tart), balaton (tart), and some kind of dark sweet. The tart is pastry cream with whole rainier cherries in a ground almond/crushed amaretti crust. This year, I finally found a savory tart cherry recipe. Tart cherries with meatballs, something the internet says is typical of Aleppo, Syria. Nom. Lastly, this year's incarnation of cherry pie. I used both kinds of tart cherries, and tapioca as a thickener because it stays clear, doesn't taste funny even if you need a lot, and other stuff I had looked up for experimenting purposes. Best version yet.

I went to see this movie onna counta I am familiar with who Florence Foster Jenkins was, or I thought I was. I mean, I knew about the terrible singing that was regarded as comic and the concert at Carnegie Hall. I didn't know she was a sufficiently gifted pianist as a child to have performed publicly, including at the White House. I didn't know that she had syphilis, which she almost certainly got from her first husband, and regardless of what can be completely verified as fact it would have severely affected her life - both the disease and its then treatment in 1885. I knew she had money, which would have made all the difference to her life, especially with that illness. So, about the movie - If you only know Simon Helberg from "The Big Bang Theory", that show does his talents no service. Firstly, he's a very good pianist. For realz. Secondly, a great deal of his acting is just his face. It is most impressive and used to excellent effect. Unfortunately, they dire...

Scott Walker is a piece of work.

Scott Walker is a piece of work. I accidentally caught the Erin Burnett bit where she asked him how Sec'y Clinton's statements** inflamed the situation. Essentially, he never answered. He suggested that Clinton was criticizing the police, and said something about POTUS' lack of leadership inflaming things. Then he said something about leadership means you shouldn't say anything, although I think, and it's a bit of a stretch, but I think he meant you should avoid the appearance of taking sides. This still suggests he thinks someone took sides. What I really think is that he is trying to play politics and tell people Clinton took sides, whether she did or not, and the not taking sides thing on his part is really a way to suggest there are no sides to take. Which is a way of saying that there isn't a problem, just problem makers and if they'd go away, everything is fine. Which it obviously isn't. **I didn't see her speech, so don't know the full con...

Gee, there couldn't be any kind of implicit biases underlying how reimbursements are determined.

Gee, there couldn't be any kind of implicit biases underlying how reimbursements are determined. Like, if their hypothesis about geography is true, why would there be more women there, and why is that region paid less? It's entirely possible that there is a hidden bias if that is the case. It would also be interesting to look at denials. In theory nobody knows the sex of a doctor when they are dealing with billing and reimbursement rates, but if there's a denial and arguments back and forth, chances are somebody sees your name, or talks to you on the phone, which could lead to subconscious biases. http://time.com/4452372/women-doctors-medicine-pay-gap/ http://time.com/4452372/women-doctors-medicine-pay-gap

How many other people have suffered and continue to suffer all over the country because the culture of medicine is, in general, abusive and invested in not changing? That, and the only reason anybody is bothering to pay attention is because this was one of their stars. One of the things that Sec'y Clinton said in the speech I attended during the primaries was that you couldn't do all the things Bernie Sanders was talking about with public universities because you'd have an untenable fight with the majority of states having Republican governors. It's one of the positions that has, at least officially, shifted to Sanders' side of the argument, probably because it was negotiated before the convention. The thought that it is a political thing tied to eliminating unwelcome ideas seems like an obvious hypothesis, but I wouldn't have considered it per se until reading this. It now makes me wonder how deliberate a subtext might be there because all those people being able to go to college would also have threatened the exclusivity of a socio-economic elite. But then, as always, the peasants are revolting. https://newrepublic.com/article/135972/republican-war-public-universities https://newrepublic.com/article/135972/republican-war-pu...

"DEA declines to loosen restrictions on medical marijuana" Really, g+? You have to change the headlines and the pictures? I'm going to start off by saying from a science perspective, I have very little opinion on this. You can't have a lot of science based medical opinion because they won't allow research, which, if you read the blurb, is what this is about. This is stupid on multiple levels. 1) DEA is neither a science nor a medical organization. They are not qualified to make these determinations. They should not be preventing people from collecting the data that could. For all they know, real research could confirm that there is no genuine medical use. So why prevent controlled research? 2) Allowing controlled research use of or on something in no way abrogates applicable criminal law. For example, certain drugs are straight up criminal if used by humans, but if you do animal research, you have controlled access to them because they are appropriate and efficaci...
