Am I the only one this makes very uncomfortable?

Am I the only one this makes very uncomfortable? U.S. forces in Africa this week staged what would have been an otherwise unremarkable attack against Islamic State extremists but for one key detail: The operation was the first to rely on authorities granted under the Trump administration that allow the military to conduct lethal strikes outside a designated war zone and without explicit White House approval in advance. https://www.usnews.com/news/politics/articles/2017-09-29/in-libya-strike-military-shows-new-lethal-powers-under-trump https://www.usnews.com/news/politics/articles/2017-09-29/in-libya-strike-military-shows-new-lethal-powers-under-trump

I knew the wildfires had been bad in British Columbia this year, and then I heard they had hit Waterton Lakes, which is contiguous with Glacier National in the US. I don't recall hearing anything about major fires there, but it turns out there were, and are still. I suppose that info got overshadowed by all the hurricanes. Meanwhile, there's been significant damage and it sounds like they are basically just waiting for more snow and rain to finally put the fires out completely. This really has been the September of disasters. http://www.hungryhorsenews.com/article/20170929/ARTICLE/170929971 http://www.hungryhorsenews.com/article/20170929/ARTICLE/170929971

My SIL's mom is a minister, but, you know, not all ministers are like this with personal stuff.

My SIL's mom is a minister, but, you know, not all ministers are like this with personal stuff. Explains a lot about why she and my mom get along, though. From the book of face: (blank & blank)'s new house. Just thought those who helped them find it through prayer might enjoy seeing it. P.S. There was no praying needed. My brother just got relocated by a large banking institution from SF to DC. They paid for it. Yeah, my brother and SIL had to look for about two months, 1 before and 1 after the move, and they had one shady thing happen, but come on. They weren't not going to find a house in the VA suburbs, it was just a question of how much time and effort they would need to expend and how much it was going to cost. Saying you had to pray for it makes it sound like they were imminently homeless, or something, not to mention like if you pray someone will just show up and hand you a house. I have a low tolerance for this stuff.

I think this last bit is more revealing than might have been intended.

I think this last bit is more revealing than might have been intended. Volusia County spokeswoman Joanne Magley said all those who needed a place were provided with shelter. She said everyone had to produce identification to get in, and those who had no ID or were homeless were sent to separate shelters for the homeless. “If you don’t have an ID and we can’t do a background check, how do you know if someone is a sex offender?” she said. “You can’t just let anyone into a general population shelter.” Yes. In the middle of a hurricane evacuation you are, indeed, responsible for the safety of the people in the shelters. Because anyone without an ID must be a sex offender ... P.S. I guess it's ok if they prey on the other people without ID? https://apnews.com/813b55bfe9b2441fb6f7c0928fdf1684 https://apnews.com/813b55bfe9b2441fb6f7c0928fdf1684

There's some legitimate commentary in here, but based on my experience during the election, the headline: The Daily 202: Trump's Katrina? Influx of Puerto Ricans after Hurricane Maria could tip Florida toward Democrats. is another fantasy based in ignorant and biased personal dislike of Donald J. Trump. Why? Buried in the article is this: Republicans also see opportunities to make inroads with Puerto Ricans. They tend to identify as socially conservative, and while they vote for Democrats they don’t strongly identify with the party . The LIBRE Initiative, which is part of the Koch network , has spent millions trying to engage with the Puerto Rican community across Florida over the past few years. The effort tries to give Latinos tools for upward mobility, such as offering English classes in Orlando, Kissimmee and Miami. The group is working to help new arrivals from Puerto Rico with training for job interviews, etc. Which touches on an enormous blind spot that I've spoken ...

Enjoy the nightmares, folks.

Enjoy the nightmares, folks. Although, according to the WaPo article, rats in the Solomons like to tickle children, not bite them. Also, add Apocryphal Rats to the list of potential band names. In the isolated Solomon Islands, mothers and fathers have been known to sing to their children of apocryphal rats. In one rhyme, Kamare and Isuku go scurrying up a child, one rat on each side. They climb the ribs and reach the armpits, where the singer finally tickles the child. Isuku, as the song goes, is what your average New Yorker might consider a fairly normal-size rat. But Kamare, the children are told, is big. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/09/new-giant-rat-species-solomon-islands-vangunu/ https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/speaking-of-science/wp/2017/09/27/good-news-scientists-have-discovered-a-new-species-of-giant-rat/?utm_term=.e3975163c6c3 http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/09/new-giant-rat-species-solomon-islands-vangunu/

(They've apparently installed London type watch you all the time cameras on public streets in certain areas.) So I start to say they are too high up ... never getting to finish, and she immediately says (in a nasty, aggressive tone of voice) I'm not stupid, I know those are too high up to reach. I didn't say you were stupid. Well, you obviously think I am. Etc. Oooo-kay. I mean, I did eventually get to finish and explain that the blue lights for the phones are (confusingly) the same, but they are down at the level of the phone (where, yes, you can reach them), and that those little black half-orbs are the security cameras. But wtf? How do you even get anything from that that is calling you stupid? Get help, lady.

The microwaveable mac & cheese cups were on sale so I figured I try 'em, 'cuz once in a while I like trash mac & cheese. Yuck. I will never, ever eat these things, again. The White Cheddar was at least palatable, but way too salty. The Real Aged Cheddar was disgusting and the opposite of salty. It can't possibly have 390 mg of sodium in it. It all sounds like coded messages about who to hate, and how to get 'em. Clearly, I am hallucinating. “The president has free speech rights too. He sends soldiers out every day to defend this country, under the flag of the United States, under the national anthem,” Sessions said. “I agree there is a big mistake to protest in that fashion because it weakens the commitment we have to this nation that has provided us this freedom.” “The American university was once the center of academic freedom—a place of robust debate, a forum for the competition of ideas,” Sessions said. “But it is transforming into an echo chamber of political correctness and homogenous thought, a shelter for fragile egos...

A white court officer [ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_State_Court_Officers ]. Who's so incapable of controlling himself that he (reportedly) threw a public tantrum and quit his weekend fun job. Who thinks the national anthem is about "our veterans that fight and die for us" (It's not, check the lyrics. It is about the symbolism of the flag and the country and its ideals the flag is representing in the poem.) Who lives in a really white suburb (98%, when the City proper is only maybe 50%), where he makes well above the average income, where there isn't a single place of worship that is Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, or Muslim. If you have the time, it's worth listening to this whole clip. Yes, even though it's 15 minutes. If nothing else, watch Costas from 7:40 to 9:00 minutes. We all respect their sacrifice, we all honor their sacrifice. And yet, what it has come to mean is that the flag is primarily and only about the military ... but there's never a school teacher, there's never a social worker. Patriotism comes in many forms and what has happened is that it's been conflated with with kind of a bumper sticker kind of flag-waving and with the military only. I would even argue that it's a false test to demand that you support the military. Why? Because a coerced and threatened support for the military only obtains if you live in a military dictatorship, or an aristocratic dictatorship where the aristocracy is also the officer corps, and therefore you are a traitor to that dictatorship if you do not support the military. That is the antithesis of American foundational values. http://...

But they didn't and that seems even more dumb, now that I've seen the whole episode. Linking because female and pain in this culture. I think it is actually harder if you are a public performer, because there's an automatic disbelief about you, esp. if your career plays off belief/disbelief and challenging norms. I think one of, if not the main reason why men speak or demonstrate pain less in this society is because it is labeled weak and feminine. Therefore, it is even worse if a man openly experiences pain - he's not just weak, he's not a man. Our society is really messed up, y'all. https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2017/09/lady-gagas-illness-is-not-a-metaphor/540369/ https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2017/09/lady-gagas-illness-is-not-a-metaphor/540369/

Well, that's a bummer.

Well, that's a bummer. Today I found out that the reason the heritage pig farm isn't at the markets anymore is that the farmer got sick and his family can't run the farm anymore because of it. After investing in and developing a whole business with rare heritage breeds and raising them without all the commercial farming nonsense (no chemicals, no force feed, let 'em run around, etc.), not to mention being the main supplier to many restaurants, as well as small groceries and selling at the farmer's markets, they have had to sell all their pigs and close the farm. The other problem is processors. There are laws (probably with good reason) about meat processing and the farmers have to send out their animals to be processed. Well, there aren't enough processors. I mean, I'm sure somewhere there are giant commercial processors, but what's needed are more like the old fashioned butchers and processors, who know what they're doing, do it properly, and do it...

In honor of Pumpkin Spice Latte: The Horror! month, I give you things I have seen: 1. Local goat dairy that makes delicious chevre. I would actually eat both of these. 2. Peeps - if their mere peepness does not deter you, perhaps the "decadent white fudge" coating will. 3. The most disgusting to me, personally. It is even more neon orange in person, and it is only minimally milk. It is mostly sugar, with a long list of chemicals as ingredients. To be fair, none of these has that extra ick factor of being on a pizza, but some things are not permitted under the Geneva Conventions.

Redundant post is redundant.

Redundant post is redundant. "You know, I could maybe give you 10 reasons why this bill shouldn't be considered," Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley told local reporters, according to The Des Moines Register. "But Republicans campaigned on this so often that you have a responsibility to carry out what you said in the campaign. That's pretty much as much of a reason as the substance of the bill." Like you people have ever been willing to die on the hill of keeping your campaign promises. Meanwhile, it's really not a reason. It's like the Charge of the Light Brigade and any number of historical examples. If you realize you've committed to something stupid, harmful, and dangerous, given any opportunity at all, you stop . You look around, you think a little, and then you show actual leadership and say, "This is a bad idea," and don't do it . This is not a question of you gave your word. It's a question of I'm gonna prove I'm right, ev...

Not gonna get into an argument elsewhere but need to respond:

Not gonna get into an argument elsewhere but need to respond: “If you’re not paying for it, you’re not the customer; you’re the product." Unless it's healthcare. Or education. Or law enforcement. Those are different. We pay taxes for every one of those things. We pay for them, although I still think the idea that everything should be a so-called business model is wrong so I am loath to call us "the customer". In fact, even though we also pay out of pocket and pay insurance companies for healthcare, we also pay for it through our taxes in multiple ways. Certainly in single payer models you are paying through your taxes. I just don't get what the argument being made here is.

Today needs puppies. Like this typical American family. This should be a reality show, maybe titled 'It's A Dog's Life'. https://www.sunnyskyz.com/happy-pictures/2263/One-in-a-million-shot-of-the-whole-family https://www.sunnyskyz.com/happy-pictures/2263/One-in-a-million-shot-of-the-whole-family

Sigh.

Sigh. Even the speech potus gave at the UN was bullying. I can't compartmentalize like this. I mean, sure, flotus has a real platform and could make a real difference, but who'd listen while her husband continues to be himself? #ironyisdead https://www.buzzfeed.com/davidmack/melania-trump-gave-a-speech-against-online-bullying?utm_term=.bcbP0bN5D#.mlv6b91rB https://www.buzzfeed.com/davidmack/melania-trump-gave-a-speech-against-online-bullying?utm_term=.bcbP0bN5D#.mlv6b91rB

I am truly at a loss as to how Cassidy thinks more people will be covered under his version of ACA repeal.

I am truly at a loss as to how Cassidy thinks more people will be covered under his version of ACA repeal. His own state loses money for medicaid. What is he thinking? He is supposed to have been consistently involved with getting medical care to people who couldn't afford it in Baton Rouge, as well as other types of charity care. How does he think going backwards is better than taking what we have and improving it? There's been a theory for 10-20 years that if there were just more physicians involved in legislation, healthcare would be better for everybody. So a lot of people really pushed to support physicians who wanted to run for political office. My conclusion at this point is that is mostly a gross failure and with possible individual exceptions, we should never send physicians to Congress. Short list of examples why not: Tom Price Bill Cassidy Rand Paul and that classy wanna-be from Arizona, Kelli Ward https://www.buzzfeed.com/stephaniemcneal/jimmy-kimmel-went-off-on-a-...

Vivaldi, The Four Seasons, Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 8, RV 315, "Summer" (L'estate), 3rd mov't, Presto.

Vivaldi, The Four Seasons , Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 8, RV 315, "Summer" (L'estate), 3rd mov't, Presto. This is the sonnet text for this movement: Ah, che pur troppo i Suo timor Son veri Tuona e fulmina il Ciel e grandinoso Tronca il capo alle Spiche e a' grani alteri. Alas, his fears were justified The Heavens thunders and roar and with hail Cuts the head off the wheat and damages the grain. Suits certain aspects of the current news. This is honestly a crazy speed at which to play this, but every single player is doing it precisely. Damn impressive. #waybackwednesday https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=124NoPUBDvA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=124NoPUBDvA
