- locked - I fucking hate my brother. He screws up his life, makes mistakes left and right, games the system, and it always works out for him. Somebody or something always saves his ass. Sure I'm a little jealous. If I tried to pull the crap he does, or got myself into the trouble he got himself into, I'd have been disowned, in jail, or dead. I do all the right things, work my ass off, never get in any trouble, and I'm fucked. Of the three siblings, he's the one who got the most of everything poured into his sorry ass. If he hit me, I wasn't allowed to hit him back. He hit a lot. If he broke my stuff, I had to suck it up. When I competed in sports, my dad came to a couple of games or meets. But for my brother, well, he coached the team, because it was important! I busted a fog light cover on one car, once. My brother totaled three cars. Totaled them. Once by wrapping it around a tree, as I recall. I can't even count the number of times I got told I couldn'...

This is kinda dumb.

This is kinda dumb. First of all, they shouldn't just be offering this stuff for one day. That's ridiculous. They should at least offer it for all of July. Second of all, they should be offering all of it at all the locations, at least in the US and Canada - the poutine donut, the Nanaimo bar donut, the Dutchie (kinda like a raisin fritter), the red and white sprinkle donuts, and all the maple/maple bacon donuts and beverages. Dutchies are a classic Tim Horton's thing, and I'm pretty sure people in the PNW know what Nanaimo bars are. Plus, they are made but called something different in a couple places in the US outside the PNW. I wouldn't eat a poutine donut, but I'd sure eat a Dutchie and a Nanaimo bar one. Even though it could not possibly be as good as an actual Nanaimo bar. http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/tim-hortons-poutine-doughnut-canada-day-150-1.4182768 http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/tim-hortons-poutine-doughnut-canada-day-150-1.4182768

Ofcs, people.

Ofcs, people. There was flooding, there are fish. Either spend the money and get the personnel to move them or give people permission to move them or just come and get them and kill them. Rotting fish all over the place is totally not going to become a health hazard, nope, totally not. Will not attract scavengers like rats or anything like that. Definitely not flies and things. Won't end up being shoved into the sewers and into the municipal water supplies. We should have been able to eradicate polio before this.

We should have been able to eradicate polio before this. The fact that the vaccine protects even against vaccine caused strains of disease should make an even stronger case for immunizing everybody, everywhere. Unfortunately, I don't think we can do that without governments both backing and believing in these efforts, and forcing their citizens to get immunized. I don't see that happening. The window of opportunity when the world might have cooperated or not been able to mess this up is not as open as it was decades ago. "These outbreaks are occurring only in very rare cases and only in places where children are not immunized," If people haven't already been immunized, there are too many conflicts and too little cooperation, now, for it to be likely we will ever totally eradicate polio. http://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2017/06/28/534403083/mutant-strains-of-polio-vaccine-now-cause-more-paralysis-than-wild-polio http://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2017...

So, in other news not being paid quite as much attention as random tweetstorms from the Id, Senator Thune is apparently all gung-ho on making commercial pilots less qualified. [I wonder what he gets out of it.] Rambling about why this is bad: One of the first big reasons for there being fewer highly qualified airline pilots is that the military cut back on pilots some decades ago and the pool of ex-military to hire straight into commercial passenger has been hugely diminished ever since. The commercial air industry never really had to pay to train anybody, nor make long range plans to get people trained and qualified because we the taxpayers paid for it. In addition to which the training and experience any military pilot has had is far and away beyond anything even an exceptional aviation college could provide. So, you know, more extensive training requirements, including more hours in both simulators and aircraft might be a logical step. Further, this isn't just about number of ho...

Aloo gobi, with no aloo and no gobi.

Image
Aloo gobi, with no aloo and no gobi. They had kohlrabi at the farmer's market and I like kohlrabi. So this is made from kohlrabi. I used butternut squash seed oil, because I had it and it has a kind of peanut-y flavor that I like. It's also good for high temp cooking, although this isn't really that. I didn't put any chilis in, sadly, because my mom can't eat them (her throat closes; it's awkward) and on the off chance that she would, I didn't. I always miss that flavor, though.

You know how I didn't sleep the other night? Today, not the day after the insomnia, I felt really tired around 3:30/4:00 pm, plus I had that literally heavy feeling, again. Like, I feel like I'm being pressed on by extra gravity. So I took a nap. I think it helped? #csb

Flipping radio stations in the car.

Flipping radio stations in the car. Normally, I find the ridiculous proliferation of CHRISTIAN (it's so obnox you can't just capitalize the first letter) stations irritating beyond belief. But they are unavoidable. Anyway, one of them was playing some rap style thing as I was flipping past and I heard just this bit of lyrics: Arms open wide to the homeless savior Arms crossed to the homeless neighbor Didn't listen to find out if that sort of sentiment was the whole song, but they have a point, right there, about morals, ethics, and hypocrisy.

This is one of those very cultural bias taboo type topics.

This is one of those very cultural bias taboo type topics. I'd guess that just about anything that is even remotely edible has been ingested by some culture somewhere on Earth at some time. As far as pets are concerned, some people keep pet tarantulas and some of the native peoples of the South American rain forests eat them. Some places crickets are pets, other places they are food. If my choice was eat a spider or a cricket or starve, I'd probably starve, my cultural bias is so deep. In our own culture, horsemeat is still eaten some places and was historically one of the proteins available to poor people. People have kept bunnies, birds of all sorts, lambs, pigs, etc. as both pets and eaten them as food. So if dogs were raised as a food animal (not stealing someone's pet), how is that different? http://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2017/06/22/533691351/chinas-doggy-debate-dog-meat-lovers-vs-dog-lovers http://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2017/06/22/533691351/china...

Doing something illegal, not charged, but here's the thing: why the handcuffs?

Doing something illegal, not charged, but here's the thing: why the handcuffs? Is this procedural? If so, why? Do we presume everyone responds to interactions with the police by becoming violent and therefore the police must pre-emptively handcuff everyone to protect themselves? Is there no discretion with this? How would you feel if someone handcuffed you until someone else came and got you over, say, a parking ticket? I really wonder sometimes about what we've decided our society should be. https://www.usnews.com/news/national-news/articles/2017-06-23/teens-handcuffed-for-selling-water-on-national-mall https://www.usnews.com/news/national-news/articles/2017-06-23/teens-handcuffed-for-selling-water-on-national-mall

Seriously, Hollywood?

Seriously, Hollywood? You're re-making a film about the Let's Pretend version of the great, lost South? Not to mention it'd have to try tremendously hard not to be a stereotypical indictment of women and how 'they just can't manage without the right kind of men to guide and control them'. Please feel free to hear that last bit in the scare quotes in a fake genteel southern female accent. Trigger Warning.

Trigger Warning. Apparently, Netflix did a crime series that was released approximately one month ago about the unsolved murder of a nun in Baltimore in 1969. It's seriously messed up and involves sexual abuse of high school students by a priest, among other things. I never heard of any of this until this NPR story. Because of the NPR thing, I looked it up and found the Esquire article. It rings true, and it's kind of terrifying. These moths are nasty crop pests, iirc. Unfortunately, they are not actually using the caterpillars (assuming that would get rid of some of them). They are using cell lines derived from a/some caterpillar/s. Main advantage: 3-6 weeks versus 6 months to vaccine production. This could be hugely important. I know, they are touting the 'works better' bit, but they don't know if that is reproducible or how/why it happened in the first place. Quicker vaccine production means better ability to respond to potential 1918 type devastating outbreak and possibly keep it from being, well, devastating. http://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/caterpillar-grown-flu-vaccine-protects-better-egg-incubated-vaccine-n775271 http://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/caterpillar-grown-flu-vaccine-protects-better-egg-incubated-vaccine-n775271

Verbal 'intelligence', maybe? What is a characteristic that also overlaps with autism spectrum. Hm. Being non-verbal, maybe? Geeks should definitely have higher non-verbal intelligence, let's put that in the score! P.S. Afaik, it's still believed (based on data, one hopes) that more boys than girls suffer autism spectrum disorders. Also, since when do geeks not want to fit in? They may or may not be interested in fitting in with your peer group, but observational evidence would suggest that they form their own peer groups into which to fit. So, yeah, they're probably not gonna be able to prosecute this as a hate crime the same way that the higher rate of shooting black men by police is not a hate crime. All societies are rife with deep-seated or subconscious prejudices and biases. Another one is the there's no discrimination because you're a woman because no one smacked your butt. Uh, wrong. It's just quieter. So quiet, people themselves are absolutely certain they aren't biased or influenced by these societal prejudices. This guy was clearly already at risk of uncontrolled rage, but the fact that he saw people who are part of an officially not ok group can't be discounted as lowering the barrier to his behavior. Some people have complained that it was too superficial, but I think there have been some seriously bad episodes where the new Who tried to get all preachy and deep and full of itself and fell flat on its pompous, egotistical self. It's gotten worse over time, too. Another thank you for mostly picking on the British, this time, instead of another stupid American and/or Trump joke. Today's cooking post brought to you by the numbers 5 and 7 - Seven Allium Soup, and Five Grain Salad. Stuff is coming in at the Farmer's Markets so I decided to make a nice hot weather chilled soup. Shallots (equiv of 2 small or one large) 6. Leeks (white bits of 3) 7. Chives and chive blossoms (these I grewed) Also, olive oil, cultured buttermilk, 5 black peppercorns, bay leaves, thyme, pinch onion powder and garlic powder. A++, would make again. Meanwhile, Trader Joe's has stopped carrying a bunch of stuff, including a prepared multigrain salad I liked, so I made my own version: Ingredients: wheatberries hulled barley farro wild rice tricolor quinoa freeze dried blueberries (b/c the dried ones have added sugar) dried cranberries sliced, toasted almonds toasted pecan pieces green onion Dressing: olive ...

Caught a few minutes of Jennifer Granholm and Rick Santorum being guests on a CNN bit. Granholm made an if he said x then we have a rare moment of agreement statement about something Santorum said. He spent the rest of the brief segment trying very hard not to have said anything with which Granholm might agree. We agree! Uh, I didn't say that. You said x. I agree with x! I've said x before. We agree! I never said that. You said x! I said x. I agree with x! (pained, tight smile with a lot of toothy teeth) Smh, these people.

Topics: Racism, with a side of misogyny. Got here by reading about the controversy I posted about the Southern Baptists declaring themselves not ok with white supremacy this year. This article is two years old. You'd think someone would have mentioned this as part of the more advanced history and social studies classes on the Civil War. Of course not. An entire denomination that has become vocal and influential in our politics and civil discourse was founded on upholding the institution of slavery. This is ridiculous.

This is ridiculous. Big deal, he made one major movie. Yes, it's an extremely important one, but he made one, and I'd love to know if it was his idea or if Oprah pitched him, because I'm guessing there was a lot to do with Oprah. I mean, I can't tell if it's this one reporter's perspective that's so obnoxious, or if this was such a kerfuffle that it warrants all-caps public apology coverage. Did people really get all bent out of shape because she forgot "The Color Purple"? Should Spielberg get all the credit for making one movie with women about women? I'm also not so sure that this was people defending Spielberg so much as feeling that it was a white woman marginalizing a movie about people of color. Personally, I think this is being used to undermine her point, which is totally valid and which remakes her point, yet again, that women's voices are supposed to be criticized, and apologetic and shut-up. She made a factual mistake. Ok. Does i...
