Dad had a bad day today, but still managed to have a nice lunch with me and my sister.

Even when things aren't a colloquially defined problem, dealing with my family is like herding cats. We'll be ready at 8. Ok, 9. What the bleep time is it (i.e. I'm posting this at bleep time). But I'm a problem. Also, I may not be angry, irked, bothered, or vexed by any of this, not even for 5 minutes. So when I get grief because I wasn't on time for something ... insert cartoon picture of angry face with that little black steam curl rising from it.

The high temperature today was somewhere in the 30s, but several weather sites insist it was in the 20s. I do believe what we have here is a failure to communicate.

Had a nice time this morning with my sister and my father.

Today has inspired: I wish I was spending Thanksgiving with any of you. I have to get up and stop watching Dr. Who reruns. I find my lack of motivation ... disturbing.

I'm back a day and, well, the kind of stuff for some reason I was comfortable posting on LJ, but not here. Sigh. So I'll chat about some tasty stuff I made to eat. Roasted brussels sprouts: Cut in half, tossed with olive oil, lemon zest, finely ground black pepper, sea salt, garlic powder (I got lazy at mincing fresh garlic), spread on cookie sheet, cooked at 350F for 15+ minutes (until the loose leaves were crispy and the halves were a little tender. Peanut slaw: shredded cabbage (obs), roasted peanuts, sliced up green onions, dressing. Dressing: peanut butter (the kind that's just crushed up peanuts), fish sauce, rice wine vinegar, toasted sesame oil, lime juice, minced garlic, sriracha, water to thin to pourable consistency. Tasty!

So the Lake Effect may be feeling the need to make my afternoon travels less than optimal tomorrow.  Bugger.  Hope it's not what they are predicting, or at least it's the least of what they are predicting.

This is where I am ungrateful for having a place to stay so I didn't have to make a 12 hour drive that would of necessity have involved much driving in the dark. I am being forced to watch this horrible thing called Seventh Heaven. It is reruns of a TV show that my host apparently absolutely loves. I mean, I could walk away, but then that would be rude because I would not be spending time with my host. If it makes it any clearer, it is on a network called Uplifting Entertainment. Gah.

Because you need to know, it has been cloudy EVERY TIME I remembered to get up early and look for ISON.

I'm not liking the Dr. Phil connection, but maybe there are other apps out there for people in dangerous situations and I hope they do, in fact, function helpfully. The universe has decided to give me something really real to panic about. (Rod Serling's voice helps here.) Picture yourself in a two story home with a basement. All the drains in the second floor bathroom backup and overflow. The ceiling is dripping. The main junction pipe in the basement slowly oozes. It's Friday night. Your calls to the plumber go unanswered.

Wish me luck.  Also, off to annoy some people, some of whom you may know, starting tomorrow.  Who knows. I may finally resolve some things and make significant progress on others.

Let's see how many times we can self-induce panic today.

Today has been actively discouraging, already, and I need to get past that.

Canada seems to take today a whole lot more seriously, but Happy (?) Veterans Day.  Among others whom I honor is my father.

Old movies worth watching: Gold Diggers of 1933 . It is a Busby Berkeley big musical number film, but for a film that was popular at the time, it ends with a real indictment of the depression and the treatment of WWI veterans.  In addition, it is witty and well written, including lines such as, "Come again when you can't stay so long."

So we may have accidentally made apple beer? Because some yeast seems to have snuck into the cider, and now it's all yeasty and tastes like, well, beer.

You know what I really dislike (insert more intense emotion here)? People who don't like getting any other response than perky happy helpful cheerfulness. Who immediately want to know what's wrong when that's not the response they get, because obviously something must be wrong if that's not the response they got, leave you with no acceptable options except perky, happy, etc., and then tell you you're not supposed to feel however you feel. Because that's not at all irritating. Because that's not going to get you even more irritated than you might or might not have been in the first place. I'm so sorry you don't like how I feel. You know what? Tough. >:(

In the category of "things that leak in houses", the furnace seems to have been fixed, finally, and we have thus far not had to wear water wings into the cellar (again). * crosses fingers *

So, I have these air miles which are enough for a free ticket somewhere. I have to use them (book a ticket) in the next week or so or they cease to exist. On the practical side, any job hunting has been workable by car, so I have not needed to fly and I have no upcoming engagements in that department that require flighting. I am not flush at present with vacation spendy cash, either, or I would think about that. Tell me, oh internets, what shall I do?

I have this idea that somebody has a birthday up and coming. But you never know.

So tired. Must sleep. Spent last umpteen time updating LinkedIn. Need to add more, but can't do now. Flu shot today. Body reacting, so really need sleep for that. too.

Boy, I hope they get the furnace fixed when they come this afternoon. It flooded all over the place last night.

Well, the furnace has apparently decided that the best time to make it very, very clear that it will not be fixed is when you are out of town. Guess what grows when there's water all over the place.

There is a constant level of tension, everyone is on edge. It is getting unbearable.

Funnily, after the discussion a bit ago about fish frys, it seems we have been eating them for the last several weeks, and on Fridays, too, at various locales. Weird. For the curious, it seems the standard hereabouts is haddock.

Going to see two of my mom's aunts, both over 90, this weekend.
