Their hands are tied for this, but the potus gives horrible privileged people pardons while the GOP and this administration self-righteously declaim about the rule of law. http://nashvillepublicradio.org/post/he-heads-back-prison-nashville-man-says-goodbye-new-life-he-hoped-build http://nashvillepublicradio.org/post/he-heads-back-prison-nashville-man-says-goodbye-new-life-he-hoped-build

Jfc. You're getting two links on this one. The Salon one (the picture) has facts. Aside from the headline. Scotus didn't formally uphold it, it just refused to hear the case and therefore implicity upheld it. The WaPo one, presumably in the interest of "fair and balanced" journalism quotes a physician - a radiologist - who is on the staff of a Catholic anti-abortion lobby group. Firstly, she is clearly not stating facts. Secondly, poorly done, WaPo, by suggesting this is a legitimate expert opinion simply presenting a different point of view. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/arkansas-abortion-pill-restriction-seen-as-both-protecting-women-and-a-major-rights-setback/2018/05/31/6fd64a4e-64e1-11e8-99d2-0d678ec08c2f_story.html?utm_term=.b1b44385efc9 https://www.salon.com/2018/05/31/supreme-court-upholds-arkansas-ban-on-safe-method-of-medication-abortion-its-a-dangerous-precedent/ https://www.salon.com/2018/05/31/supreme-court-upholds-arkansas-ban-on...

The author should have caused me to skip the article.

The author should have caused me to skip the article. Nevertheless, it's still interesting, if only for its inability to see itself (in so many ways), and maybe for a few insights into the inner minds of American "evangelicals" and their internal mythologies. I mean, it's great that they started out opposing slavery, and all, but that seems to have been the one potentially unassailable thing attributable to them. (I'm pretty sure there were others that were not "evangelical" who opposed slavery, too.) It's a very long article, with ample opportunities to wonder about the author and his flaws amidst the interesting tidbits of information. It changes nothing about my opinions. https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2018/04/the-last-temptation/554066/ . https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2018/04/the-last-temptation/554066/

How does CNN manage to find so many irritating conservative commentators/guests?

The Netflix kerfuffle made me think of this show and some bizarre moments from it that I never understood. Then I saw this link. Yep, that's what we need. A return of another show apologizing for the South losing the Civil War written by, for, and about white people. They get full credit for addressing certain issues like the AIDS epidemic at the time, but I cannot see how this could possibly be rebooted without being even more offensive than the whole thing now seems in retrospect. Unless maybe Meshach Taylor's character now owns the company and it has other names on it and other clients than a bunch of privileged, rich, old line, white Southerners. And maybe the highest goal of the female characters is not marrying the same. http://ew.com/tv/2018/03/26/designing-women-revival-reboot-annie-potts/ http://ew.com/tv/2018/03/26/designing-women-revival-reboot-annie-potts/

I'm sure I've completely misread this

I'm sure I've completely misread this ... Has someone explained that American auto manufacturers manufacture in Canada and Mexico? While Japanese manufacturers manufacture in the US? I mean, it's not 100% one way or the other, but does anyone ever get any factual information through to him? Not to mention Americans are already having trouble affording vehicles. Let's just make that harder. Because it isn't just that the purchase price is expensive. It's that vehicles that are less reliable cost more to maintain. With all the computerization in newer cars, there are also significant limits to being able to do work on your own car, making even routine maintenance more costly. So let's just slap a 25% tariff on top. Of course, maybe that's easy to get around by just assembling the vehicles in the US. Who knows? Is this an attempt to pull jobs back into the US from Canada and Mexico? Because if that worked, there are people who will swear undying loyalty to ...

Another in my series: New Obsession - Journeys to see Tiffanys. It turns out they're not that hard to find if you are looking, although they are not always available to see. They're everywhere. Anyway, was within an hour of this and heard it had one of the Tiffany mosaics so went to see. Very much not a disappointment. First, the mosaic was quite large and encompassed the entirety of the altar, not just the altarpiece. Second, at least 20 Tiffany windows, depending on how you count them. Every window on the main floor of the church is attested. It's possible the higher windows are, as well, but documentation has not been confirmed. It's a little, English gothic style church on a corner in an old mill neighborhood. In addition to the mosaic and windows being cool, I got a personal tour from the rector, who was directly involved in restoration and preservation efforts and is very into the whole history of the place, including being highly knowledgeable about Tiffany. Today we have already assisted with tree trimming, screen door fixing x 2, and new lawn mower unpacking and running. It is a ridiculous, expensive, battery operated thing that my mother decided was the only safe thing other than an old fashioned push mower. She is really nervous around gas engines and electrical cords. Thing is, those have relatively simple on/off set ups. This thing has all kinds of push this, press that, lock those - all in the correct order to use it. Plus, it is kind of large and while it goes forward easily gets stuck going backwards because of the rear skirt. I will have fun teaching my mother how to use it. "fun" On the upside, it does cut the lawn nicely. P.S. I was informed I put the cuttings in the wrong outdoor garden waste bin. Because the 4 equivalent bins are apparently not exactly the same. And this is very important . My mother never collected the grass clippings and would not allow them to be collected by rake or otherwise when she had contro...

Things I did not know existed - asparagus ice cream. Officially the flavor is called Hadley Grass and includes nuts (pistachios, I think?). It's not as weird as it sounds. It's like a creamed asparagus with a very mild asparagus flavor - and the nuts. I don't know if this qualifies as Western or Central Massachusetts, but apparently this is an asparagus growing region and May is harvest time. This is also an area with a lot of dairy farms. One of them also makes ice cream. Thus, seasonal Hadley Grass asparagus ice cream. Add to bucket list, check off bucket list.

And no, it's not a charge because the appeal was denied, it's because it was appealed, even though that's how it sounds. They're essentially charging her the administrative costs for having to keep dealing with this while it was being appealed. They might have charged this even if it was successful. Which it sounds like it was. And yet this charge is there. The mind boggles. https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2018/05/14/610072486/sticker-shock-jolts-oklahoma-patient-15-076-for-4-tiny-screws https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2018/05/14/610072486/sticker-shock-jolts-oklahoma-patient-15-076-for-4-tiny-screws

I'd say #lolOklahoma , but this isn't really funny. As far as I can tell, the law isn't very specific, it just keeps repeating about not violating the religious or moral beliefs of the adoption agency. Based on past behavior, people are probably not over-reacting, though. In fact, I'm sure in the past a religious objection or moral objection would also have disqualified anybody non-white and certainly interracial couples. I'm offended that "similar" laws have been passed elsewhere, too. It's hard enough to get kids adopted but that doesn't mean you make a bargain with the devil and allow discrimination because otherwise adoption agencies would close down. Those agencies become suspect to me if their answer is no children will be adopted if we can't help just the ones we like. Maybe it's not as tender as the force-fed milk kind, but do not care. Meanwhile, other than taking time to poach the veal, and it does take a while, the sauce is quick and easy and all umami. It's oh so faintly a sense of fish flavor but not what you (or my mom) think it will be. This is also amazingly healthy and light while rich at the same time. There are real cases of dead kids from that kind of stuff, not to mention the abused ones. 3) Children are traumatized by being taken from their parents. Parents are traumatized by having their children taken. Trauma isn't only from "real" bad things. So even if it's true that there are vastly more cases of actual abuse going on, that's not a reason to blow off the trauma that attacking families over perfectly normal independent behavior by children can cause. We can recognize all ...

Assuming this is even correct, this is part of what's wrong with our little microcosm right now.

Assuming this is even correct, this is part of what's wrong with our little microcosm right now. First, why report on this at all? When he dies, and when the memorial is held, fine. Then it will be perfectly reasonable to discuss who will or will not attend or speak. It's vulgar and offensive to start gloating over his and his family's misery and use it as another ping-pong ball. Second, let the man and his family have this time to themselves. Gloating over his and his family's misery is indecent. Yes, this is gloating. It's using it to try and schadenfreude another dig at Trump. Which means you don't give a damn about McCain, but you do about making sure everyone knows you hate Trump. That's incredibly high on the vulgar and offensive scale. Third, this should not even be much news. McCain was a prisoner of war and Trump trumped all over him. I wouldn't invite that person to my funeral, either. Fourth, I wouldn't invite Trump to anything. The only r...

The apricots are surviving the weather! The last picture totally reminds me of Van Gogh's "Almond Blossom". Not taken on purpose to do that, but you could hardly find two trees more closely related than apricots and almonds.

A delicious breakfast.

Remind me never to let myself get suckered into a political conversation with my mom again, ok?

Remind me never to let myself get suckered into a political conversation with my mom again, ok? It's not that she's inherently dumb, or that in the end we'd support much that was different. It's that she seems to operate primarily on emotion, and I want to deal with facts. Plus, I'm wrong. What I feel is wrong, what I think is wrong. I'm just wrong. She's also dismissive of you and your experience, like she's decided some of it didn't happen, or happened differently than you experienced it. How do you tell someone they didn't have their own experiences? Must remember to never, never, never let her start a political conversation with me.

Yup.

I don't even know what to say with this. Like, you want to say there has to be some piece of information that's missing, but too much has gone on to not think it's exactly what it sounds like. https://www.vox.com/2018/5/4/17311452/gun-rights-black-lives-matter-michigan-siwatu-salama-ra https://www.vox.com/2018/5/4/17311452/gun-rights-black-lives-matter-michigan-siwatu-salama-ra

Oh, hell no.

Oh, hell no. Now that I backtracked and see this reporting, this guy is on a power trip and not someone you ever want to work for. So he will almost certainly be promoted to a two star admiral. While I can accept that there are limited circumstances under which somebody normally forbidden from doing so might need to get involved in a medical situation with people running this country, I call fertilizer on this. Karen Pence had a physician who was taking care of what needed to be done. Even if Jackson had to be the one to call Walter Reed, which seems ridiculous, he didn't need to know more than the specific reason for her being sent there and he certainly didn't need to tell anyone other than the admitting physician what was going on. Plus, she isn't part of the power structure, folks. Sorry. She's the spouse of the second in command. If it necessitated anything more than a day of the VP being distracted to the point that he couldn't do his job, well, I think the c...
