I know I said I wasn't going to listen to NPR, but CBC had on an interview with Shania Twain, so ... This is what was on. Be aware, if you listen, that the segment about the slave auctions, and they are slave auctions, includes the audio from the materials the reporters collected that led to the CNN report which has triggered multiple protests. It triggered many thoughts and emotions, but one of the loudest was that we have an incompetent bigot and his enablers running this country, actively supporting and supported by white supremacists, while actual slave auctions are happening, right now . There isn't an obvious logical thread I can state, here, but it seems entirely reasonable to me that our abrogation of our role as a leader in anti-racism, anti-slavery, and just general involvement on the world stage is not fully separable from this. Here is a link to CNN's reporting on this: http://www.cnn.com/specials/africa/libya-slave-auctions I can't even with this. I really ...
Thanks for that nightmare last night, brain. That was totally out of all proportion and totally unnecessary.

I am torn about this.

I am torn about this. While it is a huge and very public platform for the inclusion and achievement of people with various challenges like Down Syndrome, it is also perpetuating the objectification of women. With all due respect, women are so much more than jewelry and makeup and dresses and hair styles and bathing suits. Stop paying us to look good and start paying us for the work we do and the contributions we make. I'm glad for her, and it is a step forward, but she is so much more than what she looks like. So, yeah.

So, yeah. This is far more in line with my impression of him. It is not the same thing as sexual harassment, that's important, but it clearly leaves the issue of a poor attitude that places women in a secondary role. I have a really hard time listening to NPR sometimes, these days.

I have a really hard time listening to NPR sometimes, these days. They are currently having an argument about the right, as in legal right, of churches to not be taxed. This is, I assume, about the Johnson Amendment and the restriction on ALL 501c3 non profits that they can't endorse political candidates. There's a whole thing about free speech that gets up in here, and I really don't understand that one, either. Say whatever you want. If it is political speech, you have violated the privilege of your tax free status, which is contingent upon you not acting as a political organization. Also, I thought free speech had to do with public speech? Which is different than conflating freedom of religion, which it seems is also occurring here? Meanwhile, the host is trying to get the person representing the churches to answer a question about whether or not religious institutions have a right to tax exemption and the person keeps parroting "free speech! free speech!" and...

What concerns me is the ha ha, he's a conspiracy believer, ha ha, responses, and other justifications and rationalizations about a powerful leader unhinged from reality. The obvious sub-text is that there are people who will violate any custom, any norm, any law as long as they get their way and stay in power. They are too enamored of power, and too religious about their visions of governance. Some of them may just be so uncomfortable and confused that they are afraid and frozen in place while enjoying what they can of their side's power and control; they are still complicit. As for the closing remarks about Kennedy, yes, oh, boy, did he have personal flaws. Are you seriously suggesting that Jacqueline Kennedy's efforts to save the admirable and good parts of what her husband was, is an excuse for Trump? Kennedy was a legitimate war hero, and made some serious effort at actual governance. You really want to compare that with Trump? These people are delusional. Wealthy, powe...

Never simple, but computers cost money, and so do health records systems, and you are legally required to protect those computer systems, and apparently this is all now considered just a cost of doing business. Which is maybe sort of ok in a big system that spreads and absorbs some of the cost and the legal, security, and updating responsibilities. How is that supposed to work in little towns and rural communities where there might be just a tiny clinic, or a single practitioner? And while the system is going to say they were protecting patients from a doctor who could no longer practice safely, what are the system's obligations to the patients left without a doctor? Right now, apparently, nothing. I like the part where he says:

I like the part where he says: A lot of the stuff that women were talking about — what they deal with on a daily basis — I was like, "I've never seen that, so I think this might be a little inflated." But I was so completely wrong. ... Even if it's painful for yourself. I've had to sit down these last few weeks and I'm going through my head — and I hope every other guy is doing this, of not even, like, physical acts — but, "Was there a remark that I made? Was there a way that I put things?" You're just constantly now thinking of that. I see a lot of people saying, "Oh what, men are now supposed to triple-, quadruple-, quintuple-think everything that they say and do?" And you go, "Well, clearly women have had to double-, triple-, quintuple- ... think and say everything that they do, and look at all that they can achieve and do with that load on them! Can we maybe take a little bit of the slack? Will that be OK, Mr. Alpha Male?"...

This is my surprised face.

This is my surprised face. Judges exist in the surrounding culture, too, so even if they have latitude within the law, color me shocked that a bunch of white men don't get sexual harassment. Not to mention that the legislators who could pass laws or establish regulations, since that appears to be needed, are not exactly the shining white knight brigade of respect for persons. https://www.npr.org/2017/11/28/565743374/sexual-harassment-cases-often-rejected-by-courts https://www.npr.org/2017/11/28/565743374/sexual-harassment-cases-often-rejected-by-courts

In case you weren't angry enough today

In case you weren't angry enough today ... BUT the Attorney General is trying to do something about it, hence the reporting. The problem is that the system is clearly broken, and there is no consistency state to state. Also the whole attitude toward rape and rape victims. Edit: Apologies. Today turned out to be bizarrely productive. This included some minor grocery shopping, raking leaves, sweeping out the garage, and making churkey soup from holiday leftovers (there are both turkey and chicken bones, meat, and bits). It's still happily simmering away.

It's clearly professionally decorated, and would be elegant and appropriate in many settings. However, the fact that it is cold, distant, and devoid of any feeling of comfort or, well, feelings of any sort, is somehow fully representative of the impression I have of these people. There is racism in America, and it’s a potent political force.

There is racism in America, and it’s a potent political force. Racism, bigotry, anti-Semitism, xenophobia — none of it is aberrant, none of it is ahistorical, none of it is rare. What is abnormal in this era is not that there are some otherwise normal Americans who hold ugly ideas, but the attention we are giving them. We are giving them a lot of attention, and we have a choice. Acknowledge this is not the way we will be and make that change happen going forward, or lionize, rationalize, and normalize a very different definition of "American" aspiration. I'm pretty sure which one I think will consign us to the trash heap of history. https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/11/27/16701780/nyt-nazis-trump https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/11/27/16701780/nyt-nazis-trump

It's origins in the play notwithstanding, the term 'gaslighting' doesn't just apply to men manipulating women. It's a form of abuse and control, and it is not uncommon. Nevertheless, I understand the strength of the specific context she is using, here. We're taught not to believe in ourselves, not to believe ourselves. The illustration with the caption: _Women are taught to question our realities when we are young. _ is exactly what happens growing up. And keeps happening as adults. I will say that it happens to a lot of children, especially if whatever they see or say makes adults around them uncomfortable. It happens with every kind of abuse, not just the dysfunction around sex and gender roles. I couldn't tell, and still can't, if I found this movie to be a hopeful display of mid-20th century "allyship," or a depressing example of male savior syndrome. I can tell; it's male savior syndrome - or worse. The woman exists only as the men ar...

The combination of incompetence and malign intent is a very, very bad one.

The combination of incompetence and malign intent is a very, very bad one. I don't actually know what the legal precedents might be, if there is, in fact, a conflict between the legislation from 2010 that created the CFPB and the legislation the WH is using from 1998. It's possible that there are unwritten conventions that have simply been observed because it never occurred to anyone that someone would try to be an autocrat. Meanwhile, just by sowing confusion as to who is in charge the WH and Tea Party flunkies are undermining an agency that the Wells Fargo debacle alone should prove the value of. Not to mention, if the WH is so hot under the collar to get one of their own in charge, why don't they just appoint someone to replace Cordray and get him (it's highly unlikely to be a her) confirmed? This is stupid, and childish, and anything but governance. P.S. I guess the GOP is ok with the WH blowing off Congress when they think they are in charge? Like, an imperial pres...

Image
It's the weekend after Thanksgiving, and you have leftovers and access to fresh cheese curds. What do you do? Turkey Tot Poutine! There really are tater tots under there. We used leftover turkey that we shredded up a bit, and some of the homemade cranberry sauce, and very hot turkey gravy. The curds got all squeaky and melty, nom nom nom. This was actually the result of a challenge my sister and niece (the college student) issued. Were one not able to access homemade food, but could access a Trader Joe's, one could purchase all these things there, even already cooked turkey. Plus, one could get either regular fries or sweet potato fries in their frozen food section for a variety of poutine bases. Not to mention, one could do a loaded version with stuffing and green beans and mushrooms and crispy onions with stuff from TJs. We also discussed that this could totally be turned into a midwestern casserole classic one dish Thanksgiving meal.

My sister loves me.

My sister loves me. She got me coffee from Laos. Well, some wealthy donor person she works with went on a tour of Southeast Asia and brought back mini tourist gifts for people and my sister knows I like Laotian coffee so she picked that and gave it to me. She also gave me some tea from there. Yum.

Went and saw Ragnarok again with my sister.

But we're not racist.

But we're not racist. “Don’t make the mistake of thinking David Duke is a unique phenomenon confined to Louisiana rednecks and yahoos. He’s not,” Percy said. “He’s not just appealing to the old Klan constituency, he’s appealing to the white middle class. And don’t think that he or somebody like him won’t appeal to the white middle class of Chicago or Queens.” The plain meaning of Trumpism exists in tandem with denials of its implications; supporters and opponents alike understand that the president’s policies and rhetoric target religious and ethnic minorities, and behave accordingly. But both supporters and opponents usually stop short of calling these policies racist. It is as if there were a pothole in the middle of the street that every driver studiously avoided, but that most insisted did not exist even as they swerved around it. https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/11/the-nationalists-delusion/546356/ https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/11/the-natio...

Headline: How Joe Barton’s sex scandal fits into the current conversation on sex and power "If everybody that was facing 'allegations' — including the President, members of the House and Senate — resigned, we'd have a lot of unemployed people walking around." And why would there be so many people facing allegations? Oh, right, because we've said up until the last split second that it was ok to behave this way. Well, it's not. Power and privilege are supposed to come with equivalent extra responsibility and maybe we are now demanding that responsibility. P.S. Which reminds me, I maybe did not post the last fresh apple pie of the season.

Image
Which reminds me, I maybe did not post the last fresh apple pie of the season. Made with Greenings++, a classic old baking apple. The key being that they are a drier apple than what we usually have now, also not overly sweet but a lot of flavor, esp in the peel, and an awesome ability not to turn into mush when cooked. I adapted BraveTart's method of putting the cut up apples in a bag with lemon juice, cinnamon, a little brown sugar (about 1/4 cup), and I used a small amount of flour (2 Tablespoons). I let them macerate overnight in the fridge, occasionally tossing the bag around or turning it over. It worked beautifully for these type apples and I would totally use this method again. There were some crust issues, but it tasted awesome and had great texture. ++Yes, I am totally into all the crazy varieties of apples.

I was thinking about something Mike Bruce said elsewhere, and am evolving my thought process to something like: 1) Some people will never be jerks, no matter what anyone else is doing. 2) Some people will always be jerks, no matter what anyone else is doing. 3) Some people will just do whatever they think everyone else is doing. For that last group, I think there's a fairly decent population that will not be a jerk on their own, but given any kind of group behavior will go along with the group - if the group behaves well, they will behave well, if the group behaves badly, they behave badly. This takes many forms - but everyone else was doing it, I was just following orders, etc. We don't have to worry about group 1, we cannot change group 2. However, it is highly probable that we can influence group 3 to hang out with group 1 and not group 2. Thus, we should do that.

Another poorly parsed thought brought to you by this stupid timeline. Things one will argue have nothing to do with the slippery slope of entitlement and harassment: pairs. By which I mean our society's insistence that one must be paired off to have value or one has a loss of status or is, frankly, not welcome. At the very least, one is penalized. For example, buy one get one meal offers where the business refuses to come up with a 50% off option if one is not in a pair. Or the pros and cons of how one is taxed if one is single or legally paired. Or going on travel tours where you have to pay more if you are single, or you have to agree to be placed with a complete stranger. Or buying freaking dance/prom tickets in junior high and high school - it costs less per ticket if you have a date! This is not going to reassure men who may already feel the built in societal criticism of "losers" who "can't get a date" or "can't get laid". It will keep ru...

I don't know if David Letterman knew this when he used this as his closing quote as recipient of the Mark Twain prize, but Trump tweeted this same quote several years ago. I suspect they mean very different things by it since Trump was complaining about Obama and the GOP run Congress when he posted, and now we have the GOP run amok and Trump himself. “Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.” - Mark Twain

Surprising no one:

Surprising no one: Kellyanne Conway on Roy Moore's candidacy: "We want the votes in the Senate" for tax bill I swear if they thought they could get away with it, the GOP would just go full-blown open coup and dictatorship. ... if the media were really concerned about the allegations, then Senators Al Franken and Bob Mendendez, both Democrats, would be out of office. Yes, by all means let's equate a serial pedophile with sexual harassers who at least knew enough not to attack children, or just plain old money-grubbing corruption. Eru knows that Doug Jones would be a terrible choice - he's a doctrinaire liberal ! The kind that gets murdering white racists convicted. Definitely worse than a pedophile who's been kicked off the bench for not following the law he was supposed to be there to uphold. These people are doing more to make sure there's evidence of actual evil in the world than any superstitious religious doctrine ever did. (P.S. with a good and acti...

OFFS, people!

OFFS, people! I always felt that I was pursuing shared feelings, even though I now realize I was mistaken. Next time someone complains about our newly found insistence on clear and stated consent, point this out. I will just bet you anything that that is a true statement for him. Because this society keeps telling men they are entitled to a woman's interest in them. So they either become absolutely sure everyone wants them, or they turn into toxic haters. Nice options you give people, society. (Yes, I know there are men out there who somehow got a better message, or figure out on their own how not to be an asshole, but you folks are either a very quiet majority or a statistical minority.) But his wrath was swift and often fiercely personal, according to interviews with multiple former employees. Oh, man, does this sound like an ever lengthening list of men (and a few women) who I have worked for/with. Often senior or successful, always in a position of relative power. This is ano...

OMG I THINK THAT'S THE SUN.

OMG I THINK THAT'S THE SUN. Which will disappear in about an hour and a half. Sigh. Weatherpersons get half an apology because 1.5 hours of sun out of 24 is really pushing it for "partly sunny".
Weather update: Flurries, rain, mixed precip. Cloud cover - still solid. Sun - say what? Partly sunny my aunt fanny.

Dear Weatherpersons:

Dear Weatherpersons: Partly sunny means the sun should be visible below the unbroken cloud cover. Just sayin'. Yours sincerely, Me

We've gotten quite the variety pack of precipitation today.

We've gotten quite the variety pack of precipitation today. No hail, though. The ice balls were too small. Rain, snow, graupel, sleet. Fun times. #meteorology
