This is a decent article with info on the attempts at alternatives. Although, again, and I say this as someone who had to learn how to deal with anaphylaxis as a child, I strongly disagree with the doomsayers about having to use something prefilled that is a syringe, not an auto-injector like the epi-pen. It's not as quick or as reliable, but if you really look, guess what, sometimes the epi-pens don't work or aren't used properly, either. It's rare, but it isn't infallible.

Weren't the syringes also going up in price by orders of magnitude?
