Soooo
Soooo ... I only ever saw one or two stories pointing out how weird it was that if they were concerned about public perception in an international situation that the police magically immediately resolved the situation and made sure everyone knew that Brazil was safe and the swimmers were drunken bros. Gee, why don't they do the same for their own citizens who report crimes, those few stories wondered?
Now, it turns out that the swimmers, while still probably drunken bros, were not only not necessarily lying, you could quite possibly call this robbery and extortion. Nice.
