Pink Martini and Adele. Much better than the Buble.

That is an impressive butterfly stroke, lemme tell you.

Update:

Update: 1. They had talked about possibly going to radiation treatments, but the scans did not support the need for that, so Yay, because they do not feel there has been significant progression in that regard (i.e., that would need/benefit from radiation). 2. They have changed some meds because they are trying to specifically treat the nerve pain, and reduce the side effects from narcotics. Now, we are hoping my dad will take the meds with a minimum of convincing.* If I can manage to articulate it, there will be a separate post to help me deal with. So pain. Much sigh. Deep depression. Wow. *He has indescribable pain tolerance. Like, withstand torture levels of pain tolerance. But this is not good, because not breaking the pain cycle makes it worse. I am not good at articulating this, and I cannot fix it. Fuck cancer.

I am now officially sick of Michael Buble.

I am now officially sick of Michael Buble. Not that I was ever, you know, enamored of him, or anything, but it's official, now. I totally respect his work as a fisherman, and supporting charity, and stuff, but he is one of the least jazzy jazz singers, ever.
Dad sees doctor again tomorrow. I hope they can do something. It's bad right now.

Anybody know how to fix an electronic garage door?

Anybody know how to fix an electronic garage door? Or whom you call to get it fixed? The remotes and the push button in the garage itself work, the door just won't open. You can open it manually, but it takes two people (lg door) and it won't catch, you have to stand there and hold it open. I assume it is something mechanical but really have no clue. This also only seems to happen when it gets particularly cold, but that may be coincidental. Halp!

It's dangerously cold, with high winds, but it's sunny, and you were taking care of people all day yesterday.

It was zero when I got up, and the temperature is dropping. Ur doin' it wrong.

Things that should be tweets:

Things that should be tweets: We are, once again, playing both sides of the single digit coin +/- temperature-wise. Let the school closings commence. I have identified dog, cat, squirrel, raccoon, and rabbit tracks in the snow. Mostly squirrel.  I want to build an igloo in the front yard. We have enough snow, but it is not the packed kind, so it would require lots of creating packed bricks of snow, and I am too lazy. #brumination

I was wrong.

I was wrong. My niece has not finished her college applications. There are two more due this Saturday, and she would like my assistance. ION, my cold is getting better, but not gone and my mastoid air cells are being particularly stubborn about this. Bilateral earache, yay! Also, my mom is spending the day at the hospital having tests. ):(
Field-specific jargon words I intensely dislike: noninferior.

Upon further information (from a grown up), it turns out my niece was only offered a 1/3 scholarship.

Aaand, I have a cold.

Things which are hard: unpredictable (bad) side effects from things which should be innocuous.

Things which are hard: unpredictable (bad) side effects from things which should be innocuous.  Things which are harder: people feeling so badly that they lash out at someone trying to help them. Illness of sufficient nastiness can mess anyone up mentally and emotionally, or even actively change their mental and emotional state, even if it's only temporary. The doctor said to use something to treat the side effects of something else, and the pharmacist said it was not something that should have caused any problems, but the minute my dad took it, it made him sick. Of course, he's been resisting taking more and more things until he is so miserable he kind of gives up. Which means my mom is frequently put in the position of having to encourage him to try to take things. Which she really does try not to do very often.  Thing is, my dad finally took the something in question, completely outside of anyone saying anything to him, promptly got sick, and told my mom it was her fault for...

Hi - so, some things have been pretty bad recently with my dad's situation.

Hi - so, some things have been pretty bad recently with my dad's situation. I kind of need to use you guys as a support network, but it is entirely reasonable that some of you might prefer not to be subjected to tightly locked posts type content. If that's the case, please just let me know in the comments and I'll save you from myself.  Thx. #tightlocked

Doctor called dad today to see how he was doing, and he's going to talk to him again tomorrow. This is the baseline for the care my dad usually gets, which is setting a pretty high bar, but contrasting even more with the weirdness on Friday. Anyway, it's back down to the fine, we can use your zero to ten scale range, and my dad has eaten a little bit. #filtered

Well, the doctor just did something poor for the first time, and let me tell you, my response if I were the patient (and capable of speech) would not be polite. I know this because my mom called and asked me to confirm something. This is one time I would not really feel like holding my mom back if she was in a mood to go off on someone. She won't as a first response. Ranting elsewhere. #filtered
Dad at hospital, getting scans.
I feel pretty damn useless.

Oh, FDA.

Oh, FDA. And the quality of reporting on science and medicine is consistent as ever. I need to look up the wording/content on the original announcement, and suddenly find resources to dig up the original research on acetaminophen that got it approved in the first place. Meanwhile, I will empirically assume that any of you who are reading this are presumptively alive, and therefore, intellectually capable of grasping the directions on labels and from your care providers where they say helpful things like DON'T DO THAT. #jfc   #theskyisfalling

I don't think many of you on here watch Downton Abbey, but just in case ... S P O I L E R S Hope that was enough space. Dame Kiri Te Kanawa had a guest appearance on the most recent episode playing Dame Nellie Melba. It seems there's been a lot of criticism of the historical and musicologic accuracy, as well as criticism of her singing. I will say that, knowing her voice at its best, this was not the most stunning performance Dame Kiri has ever given, nor did it sound like Melba's extant recordings. However, there were places where she had a lovely line, and the main issue with the top notes was vibrato. Frankly, it's TV, so there are multiple takes and a sound track that can be edited if it seems wretchedly off. Plus, if her acting was poor, where was the director? Why wasn't she coached? I don't think they were looking for her to create a character, they were using her as a plot device. Her intro of the singing in recital format wasn't poor acting, that...

Omg.

Omg. My mother is telling my father how to reheat a cooked chicken breast. (you have to cut it this way, you can't cook it in a pan, etc.)  o.O I don't remember this growing up.

4-methylcyclohexane methanol

4-methylcyclohexane methanol Mm, tasty. And you thought you didn't need to pay attention in school when they taught you about the Mississippi River system.
I have a terrible craving for tuna noodle casserole. So carbs. Much salt. Wow.

You know how you know things are "difficult/challenging/euphemism"? Your unwell father finds you at an unspecified Starbucks because he wanted to get out of the house. I figure you can read between the lines without my leaving you extra space for that.
My dad felt a little bit better today. My mom didn't.

So, there's all these pictures and stuff about the weather over the last few weeks.

So, there's all these pictures and stuff about the weather over the last few weeks. Haven't posted. Busy deconstructing the nuclear family, or something. Anyway, we are on our second major flood watch due to the whole jotunheim/miami beach phenomenon. #sumppump   #stormsewer   Seems there was something going around about Niagara Falls being frozen. Also, some things debunking that. Because I'm sure it's critically important for you to know, the Falls doesn't freeze. The mist will freeze into thick layers of ice over everything, and the Niagara River will freeze, and ice from the Great Lakes will stop by for a visit, but the Falls themselves don't freeze. What's unusual this year is how early how much ice has built up on the river and at the base of the falls. Per the park ossifer, there are places where the ice on the river below the falls has gotten to 28 feet thick. You could probably, with difficulty, walk across the river, which happened historically on...

In other news, they eventually closed even more of the NYS Thruway (past Rochester to PA), but afaik, it is all now reopened and the poor stranded truck drivers can get food, fuel, and paid (they aren't paid if they aren't driving to the best of my knowledge). #snowpocalypse

They had ice-breakers on the Niagara River.

They had ice-breakers on the Niagara River. To try to prevent flooding. From the ice-jams. It flooded anyway. But the Power Authority is apparently still generating power, so they must have Procedures for this eventuality. I suspect a lot of Ontario and New York (State) would notice if they had a problem. #snowpocalypse

The wind blew so hard, it knocked the storm window partly out of the frame on one of my parents' bedroom windows. They have snow in their bedroom. In other news, my sister's furnace broke. She woke up smelling gas and feeling cold this morning. Fortunately, both the gas company and the furnace people came quickly. So, the interview thingy ...

So, the interview thingy ...  It would seem that I got the interview because I had networked., more successfully than I knew. It cascaded, which is what it's supposed to do when it works. In this case, it actually cascaded up (a lot of yay on some levels there). Unfortunately, it worked so well that it annoyed the person in question into giving me an interview. And he does not want to hear anything from anyone else, ever again, about me. Couched in the context of if I can get some practical experience in place that proves I can do the work, they will consider a future application (good and bad, but will explain elsetime). So, I would not have gotten the interview without the networking,  But the networking ended up pressuring and annoying the person in question. And nobody's offering me a job, for the nonce.

Oh, good.

Oh, good. We just found out that someone else who had been close with my parents, esp my father, died in June after a long, terrible illness (we did know about the illness, which had much to do with the lack of contact). I'm quite sure my mother will be bothered by this, likely out of objective proportion. I don't know how my dad feels, and I'm not asking; he's not been feeling supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Reason # X in a series Y of why I should be super-motivated to get my life in order so I can get out of here. I'd probably handle this better if I was a Fatalist, or a Nihilist, or a Buddhist, or something.

I have an interview tomorrow morning, so of course they are predicting a Lake Effect snow storm.
