Thoughts on new security process: 1) definitely quicker and easier than paper forms 2) just makes it obvious they were taking your picture all along In other news, how weird is it to have the customs agent say 'welcome back' when you're still in BC? He must be used to working at entry points on the actual border or within the US proper.
Why did we hate the world today?

Why did we hate the world today? United's online reservation system. Over an hour of my life eaten by the phone and stupid talking machines. 4 days later, thank Eru the reservation had not been destroyed and there had yet to be multiple billing (hatehate). I now have a ticketing number. If I get to the airport and there is no ticket, I will be so hating. Still have to watch PayPal and bank account to make certain there is no multiple billing going on.
There is a nifty planetary conjunction you can see in the Western sky about sunset, if you live somewhere it isn't...

Oh, for Eru's sake - I should just stop reading anything - article about creating more motivating, enjoyable, and efficient job situation (legit, not touchy feely). One organization found that "time-efficient verbal messaging" enhanced both what they do and how much they like doing it. Know what "time-efficient verbal messaging" is? Talking. In person. To another person. But, you know, you couldn't say that, because it doesn't sound all businessy.
Butchart Gardens: what rich people do when they don't want poor kids swimming in the quarry.

Things I learned this weekend: Victoria has a pretty inner harbor because an Englishman lied about being Canadian.

Definitely going to Victoria.

Definitely going to Victoria. Have off through Tuesday (!). Desperately need vacation, so maybe this will do. Probably not leaving early Friday, because not that in control of life, the universe, and everything, but since it takes a total of 5.5-6 hours door to door (walk, bus, subway, bus, ferry, bus, bus, walk), I really want to try and leave by 10, if I can. They are threatening sun for much of the weekend, which would rock. List of activities will try for include whale watching (mostly orcas), tall ship sailing, harbor tour, Butchart Gardens, Royal BC museum (good for rain), Parliament (good for rain), Chinatown tour (oldest?). Also possible butterfly gardens (near Butchart), Beacon Hill Park (they have a goat stampede!), and probably a dozen other things will pop up. I will not try to include any of the mansion/"castle" tours unless weather fail and it rains constantly. I am thinking it might be a brilliant idea to try to go to Butchart on Monday, if that's possible...
Any opinions on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200?

Any opinions on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200? Asking for your inputs. If you like an alternative, tell me about it, please. Info below re: my reasons for asking. It seems nifty, yet expensive. I do not care about the video thing, as that is one function I won't use, but I need a DSLR that's ok for someone who had used manual and other film SLRs in the past and likes to take scenic, wildlife, nature (incl macro), and sometimes architecture type photos. I do not want anything that I need to carry a bunch of different lenses around with, I do like having a burst mode for catching moving animules while also in a moving conveyance (I have done this without, but you really drop the percentage of photos you get). I like the idea of the camera stitching together panoramas (sometimes I shoot 360 when I'm outdoors). I like the idea of being able to shoot in lots of different lighting conditions with minimal fuss. I prefer using a viewfinder to focus and shoot, so I like that option,...

I don't know what they just did to g+, but I Do Not Like. It doesn't matter whether I tell it to go with one or two columns, it has big wasted gaping gray spaces on either side. It's also doing other weird things, which I could well do without it doing. Maybe I just need to spend loads of time I do not have playing with it to get it to be more useful. I still hate all the empty space.
Talked to my dad today.

Talked to my dad today. It seems PET scans are kind of a pain. For 3 days, you're extremely restricted on what you can eat and you aren't allowed to move unless you absolutely have to. Aside from that, he sounded ok (he says he's pretty tired, though) and we talked about 3D printing, designing and machining engine parts, fusion, lasers, graphene resonance, biomedical engineering, humans as an obsolete social animal, Kurt Vonnegut, Chopin, Baroque music, economics (I admit he lost me there), entropy, thermodynamics, and some other stuff. This is pretty typical of the conversations we have. Had he been born several decades later, he would officially have been a geek.

Well, the remediation cleaning people came in and I am now asphyxiating in disinfectant. I had the door open, but there's something in it that attracts bees, yellow jackets, and friends, and I don't really want to see if my epipen is working. They have recommended ripping out the linoleum, which I agree with, and theoretically removing part of the wall, which even they say is probably overkill, but regulations. I am waiting for the supervisor person to come by and evaluate and send whatever horrid estimate to the landlord and we shall see. My head really hurts, too. I want that door open, but yellow jackets.

What is it with people who absolutely refuse to understand that it isn't about them and their lack of a concept of privacy? I would also like to slap my SIL upside the head and tell her it is not ok to post baby pictures of her relatives all over the bloody internet. Post whatever pictures of yourself you'd like, but not of other people without their permission. Also also, children over the age of five are not babies, for frak sake. JFC.
Have I mentioned the plumbing problems?

Have I mentioned the plumbing problems? Because I have just returned to something with which I am not pleased on multiple levels. Not least of which is that the landlord's stand-ins seem consistently to be bothered by having to actually be called upon to stand in. Furthermore, is it entirely outside the realm of possibility that plumbers should have to prevent or clean up their dirty shoe prints, replacement parts, and possibly even bits of sewage? Or is one supposed to expect that, in spite of someone supposedly being there to supervise, one returns to sewage, parts, and other interesting things left for one to clean oneself? What the hell is the point of renting, if you have to take care of this yourself (not just the cleaning up the mess part, but the having to be there yourself to supervise part)?

So, I don't really know anything about this, but on the surface of it, they would have had to make felons of so many kids I went to high school with, who tried and succeeded at making things like chlorine gas, in the chemistry lab, without permission, knowing what they were doing, that necessitated evacuating the building for a while, that this is just ridiculous. And if she was doing something out in an open grassy area, away from people, that was her being careful. Reprimand, her, make sure she understands why there might have been a better way to experiment, but don't make a federal case out of it. I don't think she's a hero, I think she's a normal kid. If this is true, there's a whole pack of adults (including some of the commenters) who are idiots. Consequences, my eye. Originally shared by Pamela L. Gay This is wrong.
