I love spending 45 min of my life waiting for a free shuttle. No, really.

Dear Amy Young

Dear Amy Young , Hi - dumb question. Did your original formula eons ago for the hand cream include the diazolydynyl urea and its friends? I don't remember and was skimming the ingredients list while in the act of ordering on Etsy. Please and thank you.
Everyone stay safe, what with the weather, and all.

On the off chance someone is interested but hasn't seen it (Jodorowsky), empty galactic white spoiler space ... ... ... ... Ob comment - surreal. Huge vision, would have been crazy, insane film that would very probably have achieved the goal of being like an LSD trip without needing the LSD. He had his own ideas that were not exactly the book, but were very consonant with the 70's. Then again, he was very into the whole spiritual, metaphysical, messianic thing. It was a good chance to practice my languages, notwithstanding that everything is subtitled, including accented English bits. Some of it would have been tough to understand without them. There's a very vocal Siamese, probably the only character not subtitled. It really is impressive how many of the people brought together for Dune went on to work on so many classic SciFi films. Also, how many of them were a little ... out there. It's a good documentary, at least if you didn't know anything about this, like me...
Waiting to watch Jodorowsky's Dune.

Nice.

Nice. My mom just told someone that my niece is going to a college, some of whose buildings are from colonial times . That would be difficult, considering the school was founded in 1837, and most or all of it was destroyed by fire in 1896. Like the reality of the place isn't enough, legendary and magical gilding must take place. I'm sure my mother doesn't actually know those dates. I'm sure she really thinks this colonial business is true. Somehow, known facts are insufficient, and a story must be confabulated. Like it wouldn't be enough to say my niece was going to Harvard (she isn't, but that's a very accurate analogy). Why does this kind of stuff bother me so much? Truthfully, most people really don't care, but it just irritates the bejeezus out of me.

So, you know how there are some cultural (for lack of a better term) corners of the world where communicating information frequently evolves into something akin to storytelling? My dad can have a tendency to reflect this aspect of his microcosm of existence. Which can be amusing, or it can be frustrating. It can also lead to misinformation, because while strict facts may be true, their coloration may lend them to variable interpretations. He just does this; it's mostly not conscious. Like, if something is good, it turns into great. Doesn't sound so bad, but it can be a big pain. Ok. I just overheard my mom making this big story out of a piece of information I shared with her to a friend or family member over the phone. My mom is one of the first to point out that sometimes you have to verify root facts when you get info from my dad, because his presentation may lend itself to an interpretation that isn't strictly precise (or possibly not even accurate, depending). She will ...

Ok, we didn't entirely miss the snow, but it was minimal and melted immediately, so we're just cold and wet. This is technically within the range of "spring" weather, but it's still gettin' tagged. #goawaywinteryoubotherme
So, it's cold, but we may have avoided the snow?

Snow? SNOW?! Who's writing these forecasts, anyway?!

Overly ambitious food making plans for this week:

Overly ambitious food making plans for this week: 1. Prosciutto wrapped cod with braised leeks, tomatoes, and fresh fava beans. 2. Spring onion, leek, chive tart with goat cheese (I'd use kashk, but have no idea where to get it around here) and herbs. 3. Tabbouleh, or something like it, to use up the leftover ingredients from the above recipes.
Speak to me of "content strategy". I am interested in your insights, oh technologically knowledgeable ones.

Oh, yeah, I get to be pouty about missing the eclipse tonight because of the oh so cooperative weather. I mean, a total lunar eclipse with Mars (red planet) and Spica (bright blue star) in the same general vicinity would have been very cool to see. #winterisoverachieving
And the rain and wind have already stripped most of the buds off the trees. Insert pout here.

For the nonce, it appears that we will be in Ann Arbor from May 14-20. At present, I may have access to a car Thursday morning through mid-afternoon. It also looks like I would be available but carless Saturday up to 3 or 4 pm. If it would work, I'd like to visit Maggie one of those, and see Stina's new place and visit the Detroiters on the other. Lemme know watcha think.

I really really cannot begin to process anything at all about Westboro and their claims to be a church or anything else. Do they constantly monitor police bands or something just so they can immediately make the most calculatedly asinine, repulsive statements about any possible tragedy?

Words I swear people make up because they think jargon is a lost art their language skills are poor: "electronify".

Words I swear people make up because they think jargon is a lost art their language skills are poor: "electronify". Used in a sentence: "Electronify your referrals and save time." They could protonify or neutronify them, but I don't think that would really help, either. Then again, leptonify would be more inclusive and encompass the electron approach. #witide

Dad saw the oncologist today. Cautiously stable and encouraging. Importantly, my father decided to be positive about it, so that is good. Has another appointment next month. Really important thing, He Walked Without The Walker.

From scratch raspberry lemon cupcakes I made for my mom's birthday, which is today. Italian meringue buttercream, flavored with powdered freeze dried raspberries (except for the edges), filled with homemade lemon curd. The macaroons were just using up egg whites, along with from a coconut meat, dipped in 70% Scharffen Berger (could not find Valrhona, boo hoo).

Things that go boom:

Things that go boom: Originally shared by Winchell Chung Rocket performance is measured in "Specific Impulse" (Isp), in units of "seconds". Most chemical rockets (such as the Space Shuttle) max out at about 450 seconds. However, there is one that has an Isp of 540 seconds. But it is insanely dangerous. Just mix liquid hydrogren at zero degrees K with molten lithium at 450 degrees K and throw in some raw fluorine. Hilarity will ensue. The temperature difference between the first two ingredients will thermal shock the heck out of the combustion chamber, and fluorine is always a bad idea. Need to read more (i.e., validate information), but sounds concerning that generic drug manufacturers would object to safety monitoring because it would cost them money. It suggests that the brand name drug manufacturers have been supporting all the safety follow-up, even for the generics, and the generics have had little if any responsibility for this. No matter what, the generic drug companies would still not have any reason to raise their prices significantly, because they would still not have had to pay the costs of 10-20 years of work and infrastructure to get their drug to market in the first place. http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/822961?src=wnl_edit_medn_wir&uac=21663HG&spon=34

My dad got up and left the house for a little while today. This is great, but I am getting mental whiplash trying to keep up with these changes.
Fort Hood has scary karma. Not sure I really want to know what's going on.

You probably saw this before, but it's pretty neat.

You probably saw this before, but it's pretty neat. Parenthetically, this is one of the things I miss about being a musician. We would just randomly do things like this, although that was before it was widely referred to as a "flash mob" and uploaded to YouTube. It was a lot of fun. Now that I think about it, though, we did this far more often in Europe than in the US, which is too bad. I suppose I have some idea, but I wonder why that was? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KqOjbH5Dio&feature=share

My dad's given up.

My dad's given up. He hasn't been in pain in some time, and he was doing PT and OT and talking about trying to get some kind of recovery going from that bout of awfulness. He's so scarred by that, though, that anything at all throws him completely into a terrible anxiety depression thing. And he gets into these irrational behaviors that are hard to deal with. He got some kind of a sinus thing and he started getting fevers. We won't know if it was just sinuses or not, because coincidentally this was the same time that they were doing the next round of testing to see how the cancer was doing, and it's worse. So the fevers could be sinus or cancer, or both. Thing is, he was refusing to take anything for the fever, so of course he felt awful. Then, one of the weekend nurses came in and he complained about how terrible the sinus pain was. Not that it wasn't bad, but it wasn't out of the range of normal bad sinus discomfort. Thing is, he convinced her to stop tryi...

Cool. Originally shared by Adafruit Industries This rare book opens 6 different ways to reveal 6 different books #ArtTuesday http://adafru.it/dfB This is one of the coolest versions of book binding that we’ve ever seen! Via Visual News. Book binding has seen many variations, from the iconic Penguin paperbacks to highly unusual examples like this from late 16th century Germany. It’s a variation on the dos-à-dos binding format (from the French meaning “back-to-back”). Here however, the book opens six different directions, each way revealing a different book. It seems that everyone has a tablet or a Kindle tucked away in their bag (even my 90 year old grandma), and so it sometimes comes as a surprise to remember the craftsmanship that once went along with reading. So, um, it's possible that I will be in Ann Arbor roughly from May 14 to May 20.

So, um, it's possible that I will be in Ann Arbor roughly from May 14 to May 20. There are reasons why this is not completely clear, but my niece is graduating, and my parents were planning on being there. My mom still for sure intends to go. My dad is in a bad place emotionally and psychologically, and on a day where he feels well, he mostly wants to go. On a day where he feels poorly, he's not going. That being said, I am sort of the designated driver (my dad has decided he shouldn't drive, even if he is feeling well, and my mom doesn't drive long distance because she falls asleep after 1-2 hours.) If we do go, I will not need to be present 24/7 for family related activities, so could possibly annoy other people with my presence. Anyone wishing to sacrifice themselves for annoying, please post below.
