Yes, at this point, you can't have a trial.

Yes, at this point, you can't have a trial. The thing that gets me, though, is that this says that he had at some point in the past, when he finally admitted to having ever been at Auschwitz, said he was unaware of the crematoria. And this is common, that people claimed they didn't know anything, whether they were civilians or military or whatever. Here's why I would never, ever believe that for a second. There's a funeral home company around here that built a cremation facility at their original funeral home location before the area around it got overdeveloped. People complained about the smell, so they tried to move it somewhere else not as close to homes. And people complained about the smell if they were within a given distance and down wind. So they have had a hard time finding a location for a new crematorium that was not ridiculously inconvenient and costly because it had to be far away enough that nobody complained and it could meet legal requirements and so on...

- locked - My mother, queen of the over-dramatic catastrophizers. 1) Always remember to start by speaking as if you are speaking to yourself, but in a room with at least one other person. 2) Follow up by saying, "I am speaking to [insert name here of person]". Because any normal person would assume you were just talking aloud to yourself, so make sure to make it an announcement, preferably fraught with unspoken meaning. No, really, you can totally convey this by tone. 3) Optionally, state that This Is Important. Because you must reinforce The Tone. 4) Proceed to give some sort of general information that probably has a point but make sure not to explain the point. Be annoyed when people don't get the point you haven't stated. [At this point you are reasonably certain no one has died, but you never know.] 5) Restate, including the Catastrophe to Come, but still somehow not making it clear to anyone not inside your head what the catastrophe is supposed to be. 6) Get sup...

This is pretty cool. The people aren't as close as it looks, but the orca up there do not seem to bother about you if you leave them alone. Meanwhile, they managed to capture the light, which is one of the difficult to describe aspects of what's so beautiful in the area between Vancouver Island and the Mainland, amongst all those other littler islands. The light up there is incredible, and it is captured very well in these videos and pictures. http://globalnews.ca/news/3702919/orcas-gartley-beach/ http://globalnews.ca/news/3702919/orcas-gartley-beach/

Some useful info in comments about Houston Food Bank and various religious affiliated charities - Catholic, Jewish, Episcopalian, and others. A number of these groups don't proselytize while they are helping you, although as someone pointed out there are groups like the Salvation Army that may not discriminate while helping during a disaster, but have problematic standing policies. He isn't going to get dinged for being himself, that is, he doesn't care about individuals. He's the front man and he is good at that; other people are there to do the actual work. Fortunately, the professionals are there and doing their job, and lots of ordinary people are helping, too. He will get acceptable points for showing up and boosting people's morale. To be fair, that is something that people need, as well. The bigger issues will be whether Congress can get an aid package together and passed without being jerks. By which I mean the GOP doesn't try to poison the well with something they know the Dems don't want stuck into whatever aid bill is proposed, just to make the Dems look bad. At which point, of course, he would happily tweet away and make things worse. But he has met the minimal presidential standard (mps), which is the standard under which we are currently operating, so he'll get a pass on lacking human empathy. https://qz.com/1065191/hurri...

I looked and it's so well known that it's on Wikipedia. Houston, we have a problem. Essure is causing problems, regardless of why, it's not all it was cracked up to be and the initial studies were, as suspected, way too short (but standard for what happens, not something unique). Also, it's the fibers inside that are supposed to cause the inflammation. I'm guessing that was originally inspired by observing the body's response to various suture materials. Anyway, looks like it's not the advance it was intended to be. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essure https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essure

Just a little of the cherry tomato harvest that has been coming in over the last couple of weeks. The red grape tomatoes are the least productive ones, while the so-called heirloom variety yellow gooseberry produces golf ball or ping-pong ball sized tomatoes, so large for a cherry. The currant variety was supposed to be heirloom gold rush, but they're red, so obviously not and therefore, I don't know what kind of currant tomato they are. Nevertheless, they are currant sized and very productive. The best ones, though, are the sun gold (or sungold, I've seen both). They are cherry tomato sized, very orange, very sweet, and super productive. #victorygarden

So, I got curious and poked the lazywebs, because how come all this refining is concentrated in one part of the country? And is that a good idea? Turns out, there were at least 2 refineries in and around Buffalo that were shut down back in the 80's. I'm guessing there were refineries elsewhere, as well. Now, this also led to the discovery that the former site of the one refinery was listed as a brownfield clean-up site. Not optimal. Isn't this critical infrastructure? Is it really so old and unsafe? I mean, we kind of still need this stuff; everything hasn't gone renewable and it won't any time soon. Just wondering, as I wait for gas prices to hit $3.00/gal. https://www.forbes.com/sites/jamesconca/2015/03/02/forget-about-climate-change-americas-refineries-make-keystone-xl-a-bad-idea/#36fca4206d95 https://www.forbes.com/sites/jamesconca/2015/03/02/forget-about-climate-change-americas-refineries-make-keystone-xl-a-bad-idea/#36fca4206d95

Yep.

Yep. They are very worried about helping people out in Texas. Lest we forget what a group of disingenuous individuals are running this country. Sessions said that Trump “is rescinding restrictions from the prior administration that limited your agencies’ ability to get equipment through federal programs, including life-saving gear like Kevlar vests and helmets and first responder and rescue equipment like what they’re using in Texas right now.” Surely the attorney general knows, though, that grenade launchers are not needed to rescue anyone from a flood. By inference, this is also a reasonable explanation of why Houston was not evacuated. - Harvey did not track in the direction of Houston, - Allison (2001) had given them experience with exactly this sort of rain event, - not mentioned here but Rita (2005) missed altogether and the attempted evacuation caused deaths because millions of people stuck on the roads. Thus, a body of logic and experience suggested staying put for Houston. It's just that this was incomprehensibly worse. Plus, while meteorologists are right a tremendously high percentage of the time, sometimes, like with Rita, they are not. So if the only reference they could give officials was "like Allison, but worse", it's unlikely most people would understand what that could mean, and even the weather folk saying they knew it all along are being a bit se...

Catching up - this is from the 4th annual Miyazaki chalk fest. You can see which ones got washed out by the rain on Saturday even though people had tried to protect some of them. People redrew or started new on Sunday. Really neat to watch in progress. Naturally, after viewing the chalk drawings, I went and got a soft serve matcha ice cream at the new place nearby. The left is from this morning; the right is now. It's not just how bad and how widespread the flooding is, it's how many gauges that they aren't getting data from (the gray ones). And this is supposed to get worse? Scary.

I've been in that convention center - it's enormous. That's a lot of people. Yipes. Also, there's info on donating blood and the SPCA for donations. I'm sure there will be more things like blood drives in the near future, when they can get things to the people who need them. #HurricaneHarvey http://www.nbcdfw.com/weather/stories/Dallas-Prepares-Convention-Center-as-Mega-Shelter-for-Harvey-Flooding-Victims-441910563.html http://www.nbcdfw.com/weather/stories/Dallas-Prepares-Convention-Center-as-Mega-Shelter-for-Harvey-Flooding-Victims-441910563.html

This is a well written and thought provoking article about this.

This is a well written and thought provoking article about this. You know how else the medical and research establishments continue to fail to address these legacies? The required ethics courses always talk about Tuskeegee and syphilis. This is the example given of "why black people don't trust the medical establishment". That was a study done on black men. Men. There are many reasons why it should still be archetypal as an example of unethical medical and research behavior. Nonetheless. Of course, it is possible that now they may include information about Henrietta Lacks and HeLa cells. That's gotten a lot of attention since Rebecca Skloot's book came out. Rebecca Skloot is white. I'm sure that isn't relevant, at all. Meanwhile, nobody even mentions this guy. At all. Maybe if you do a whole ObGyn residency they do? This would mean talking about a white man, BMOC, and the totally crappy way that people still treat ALL women medically, and how much worse ...

About all that HIPAA bull that hospitals and doctor's offices go through every dang day ... I hope they sue the heck out of Aetna. Having envelopes with windows bigger than needed just to show an address are stupid. Also, you print just the address on the section that is supposed to show in the window. Content should be on a different part of the trifold. Major screw-up Aetna. Major. This is egregious because HIV and our society sucks, but any personal health information can be used against people in a discriminatory manner. The only reason this is getting the coverage it is is because it's about HIV. How many other people had other info publicly exposed about other medical concerns? And if it was only the HIV patients, what the actual heck is going on at Aetna, because that suggests something discriminatory, as well. I've never seen anything this ridiculous and stupid from any financial institution and certainly not with health info. Very bad form. http://www.npr.org/sec...

According to the dictionary of the Institute of Turkish Language, jihad is an Arabic word meaning "a religious war". Education Minister Ismet Yilmaz argued that the word was misinterpreted and what it actually meant was to serve the community, to increase welfare, to secure peace and understanding of one another. Um, may I request if some of you who might know something about this could offer clearer info? I somehow find it challenging to think one word means both religious war and community service, peace, and understanding. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-41003105 http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-41003105

This story is sort of the inverse of today, but it's a story I remember making me very, very angry when I read it as a kid. I wanted to hurt those kids; I wanted to lock them in a hole forever. There was nothing bad enough to do to those kids. And the teacher, man, was I mad at that teacher. Reading this story as a kid was probably the closest I have ever come to actually hating. Mostly terrible eclipse photos. Lots of nifty tree pinholes as it progressed. Totality: - It did get a little cooler, although not hugely. However, the air got completely still and there was almost like a suspended animation thing. - The light got darker and weird, like, flat, or something, just before and just after. - It did not get as dark as I expected. I think I was expecting it to get, like, midnight dark. It reminded me of summer in Vancouver, where if you looked west over the ocean it looked like the sun had set but the light never quite completely disappeared, even at 11:00 pm. - The stupid cicadas apparently got a little confused, but they never completely shut up. Like, they weren't all noisy and then poof quiet during totality. Nope. They just got a little confused about their usual crescendo decrescendo cycle. They actually shut up for a while after the sun came back post totality. Weird. - The corona may not be bright enough to damage your eyes, but it sure feels int...

Oh, man.

Oh, man. I went out and came back before 8:30 am. It's already getting crazy. People are camped out all over already, including the big open grass area near the hospital and in the mall parking lots. There's accidents already, and the major interstates coming into South Carolina are already parking lots. I hope all those people planning on sitting outside from 8 am until then have a LOT of water. Don't know where they're gonna find a bathroom, though. I think I mostly made a wise move not to be anywhere in downtown, even though I'm sure there's great viewing parties and other stuff going on. The museums, the zoo, the universities, and state parks are all sold out and many are already at capacity. The temperatures are over 80, now, and will be well over 90 by this afternoon and the time of the eclipse. The cicadas are loud . Interestingly, they are supposed to go quiet with totality. It'll be interesting to see hear.

I have arrived in Greenville, SC. The flight to Charlotte, NC went fine, and then we had one of those landings where you're flying, and then you're not. Nothing wrong, just probably somebody thought they had the nose up a bit more than they did, so the plane kind of smacked into the runway a little. And then it seems they build extra time into flights in and out of Charlotte because sitting on the tarmac waiting to get to your gate because traffic patterns on the ground is a thing? The airport is a construction zone, yay? I was fortunate to get a rental car, even though I had reserved one. I am packed (finally), I have cleaned and organized the refrigerator and freezer (it will be a mess when I get back, I'm sure), and I have cleaned my room and made it nice so my sister can stay in it on her way to returning my niece to college via London (it's a unique route to Massachusetts). I have left keys to everything (well, I have one house key with me), I have left notes about everything (I cannot believe this is my life, now, but it is), and my niece's and sister's presents are wrapped and will be on my bed for them to collect while I am gone.
