In re: New Dr. Who season and spin-off Class.

In re: New Dr. Who season and spin-off Class. Class still worth watching. Rather intense for an ostensibly junior high to high school range target audience. At least, you'd get an NC-17 over here for the sex scene. Some of the violence is pushing it a bit, as well. As for Dr. Who, I still can't understand Bill at least half the time. I have never had this much trouble with a British accent. Maybe if they'd just get her to slow down? I mean, I've started recording the episodes on purpose so I can replay them over and over in spots to figure out what's being said. Like, I swear the word "melanin" came out as "mwn". It took me two tries to figure out. Maybe the broadcasts are just messed up, though? I mean, by the end of this week's episode the mouth movement and soundtrack were so far off it was like watching a satire of an old movie with a terrible English dub. I still think they are doing well with her character overall, though. Meanwhile, a ...

Maybe this is poor reasoning, but I really feel that if the Catholic church would just say it was a matter of personal conscience and not an excommunicable sin, and stop indoctrinating people thusly, we could get rid of ignorance in our society and a lot of stupid laws that are abusive of women. Any language that has awesome words and concepts like: Hundslappadrífa (and its friend, Grásleppudrífa) Gluggaveður Sólarfrí ("When staff gets an unexpected day or afternoon off to enjoy a particularly sunny and warm day.") Needs to be preserved. Of course, I live somewhere those words would be useful. I also like that the word for midwife translates as "mother of light" (ljósmóðir) and nipple translates as "spear wart" (geirvarta). I'm sure it doesn't technically work this way, but I feel like it would be kind of fun to change the opening line of Beowulf to: Hwæt! Have I mentioned that I am also watching "Class" on BBCA?

Have I mentioned that I am also watching "Class" on BBCA? It's a Doctor Who spin-off and it's pretty good. I especially like the one character who is bitter and snarky and capable of kicking ass. Don't mind the way the others are handled, either. It's also a bit more realistic, if you can say that about this kind of show. I'd have to be probably unacceptably spoilery to explain, though. Has anyone else watched it (it was aired before on BBC proper), or is currently watching it?

Latest episode of Dr.

Latest episode of Dr. Who ... Started better than it ended, wasted a lot of potential to be deeply interesting, amazing setting, pretty suboptimal use of some good actors as other characters, not the worst episode by far of either the whole new Who arc nor the Capaldi episodes. Watch without expectations and it can be enjoyed. s p o i l e r s p a c e Great ideas, either too many for one episode or injudicious distribution of time spent. My sister is right. It is very hard to understand Bill's accent many times. She speaks very quickly and and/or sort of smushes the words. Needs more articulation and I think it would not destroy the character to have her speak just a bit more slowly and/or clearly, even when excited. So far, I generally like Bill's character, but we'll see where it goes. Lame use of Nardole to show up, throw away plot point line (oh, I see, we're going to have another one of those ridiculous season long arcs, are we?), and walk out. Like, why bother. How...

The Great Chocolate Cake Saga.

Image
The Great Chocolate Cake Saga. My mom asked for a chocolate cake for her birthday, specifically, for a cake her mother used to make. As it happens, my mom had this written out by my grandmother. Of course, then my mom proceeded to say how it was not what she remembered and, oh, that wasn't really the frosting my grandmother used and she didn't like that and just wanted a "regular" frosting. Ultimately, though, I made the cake per what was written down. Wherein it was discovered that probably a few pieces of info were lacking. There's a bit of confusion about whether the recipe intended to use dutch/alkalinized or regular cocoa, which matters for taste, not to mention acidity, and the pans probably needed a parchment bottom, not just grease/butter and flour. They were not burnt, but would not come out of the pan. After some hemming and hawing, my mother decided that she guessed that was the taste and texture she remembered, notwithstanding the fact that it was in ...

If there's supposed to be some content, or thought, purpose, or structure, then no, this is not great oratory. It's a repeated catechism of nonsense. And in TV interviews, he sometimes offers tips on matters including lighting and chair placement, with an intuitive sense of what makes for good TV. Random drag race thoughts: it really kinda is RuPaul's best RuTherapy show. It hasn't quite crossed the full-blown exploitation line, yet, although I keep thinking about that. Lake Ontario is flooding. It's 18 inches higher than usual and isn't supposed to crest for a month or so, when they expect it to be 11 inches higher. They are sandbagging communities all along the coast east of here, although there's a spot very near this one with mobile homes and they are already flooded and almost cut off. There used to be a beach, here. The trees and rocks and debris are shoved up against the drop off that's about 2 feet, there. You can see the color change in the water where the beach was. That's ... not a good final quote. “As long as people are benefiting…you use it,” Weinstein said. “If resistance emerges, well, maybe there'll be a new product.” Wow. Also, just as a gauge of how effective/nasty chlorhexidine is, it is one of the things you can use to treat acanthamoeba eye infections because it kills cysts and trophozoites. It's a harsh chemical. Risk/benefit is important with this kind of thing. http://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/usa-superbugs-research/ http://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/usa-superbugs-research/

I don't see this as men losing. I see it as moving incrementally toward equilibrium. Young men aren't falling behind. This is a long-overdue correction, if anything. http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/04/19/524699805/young-women-make-economic-strides-as-young-men-fall-behind-in-u-s http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/04/19/524699805/young-women-make-economic-strides-as-young-men-fall-behind-in-u-s

We don't have addiction specialists partly because we don't consider this legitimately medical as a society.

We don't have addiction specialists partly because we don't consider this legitimately medical as a society. We see it as a moral failing. I really hope we can keep moving away from that unscientific, ignorant and harmful attitude. This story is just painful. http://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2017/04/20/519481712/how-do-former-opioid-addicts-safely-get-pain-relief-after-surgery http://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2017/04/20/519481712/how-do-former-opioid-addicts-safely-get-pain-relief-after-surgery

I don't agree with every single aspect of how this is presented, but it is an overall good overview, especially if you don't know about it at all. Short version is: Nazis tried to march in Skokie, IL when there were a lot of Holocaust survivors living there. I bring this up because we are having problems with speakers at Universities, and similar. I may not like what they are saying (boy, do I not), but they have a right to say it. They may be being irresponsible, but they have a right. The First Amendment is a tough one. It challenges everything people like to hang onto and it's easy to abuse the privilege and disavow the responsibility. I don't know how the courts and the legal community have determined when free assembly and free speech cross into not protected by the First Amendment, although I know that speech and assembly are not completely unbridled. I do like the quote from Brandeis, though: As Justice Louis Brandeis once explained, the Framers of our First Amen...

Oh, man.

Oh, man. The "hippo" problem is rampant in medicine, especially in surgery. Who brings in the most money? You keep what you kill. They get the most say, the best stuff, the most latitude and tolerance for whatever behavior. It isn't just surgeons, though. Who's the highest paid, who's the most senior, who's the most famous or influential. There are hippos everywhere. And if they see someone nominally in a position of power who isn't throwing their weight around, they mock them as weak and undermine them if possible. It's amazing, I've never heard this term before but it is So Apt. http://www.bbc.com/news/business-39633499 http://www.bbc.com/news/business-39633499

So when I caught that plague all y'all had, the first several days devolved into some fun moments of not exactly delirium, but ill and on cold medicine and, you know. There were a lot of random thoughts that just happened. In honor of my being 99% recovered, I thought I'd share what happened in my head when I got that loopy. For catarrh and voice, if you've got one: Hello mucus my old friend I've come to choke on you again Because a virus softly creeping Invaded me while I was breathing And the infection that it planted in my face Has grown apace Amid the sound of coughing And as the viscous colloid filled The empty the spaces in my head I developed pharyngitis, Sinusitis and rhinitis And my throat was torn by a thousand shards of glass Each time I gasped And whispered between bouts of coughing

I've heard Dr.

I've heard Dr. Ruit speak and met and talked with Geoff Tabin. In fact, like a lot of people, I was interested in working with his group. Turns out, though, that this was how I learned one of several valuable lessons. They teach local people to do the operations and other care so they don't need foreigners coming in. What a concept, self-sufficiency for your own people. Also, because I'm sure the person in the comments isn't the only person to wonder about the money - The base fee paid for cataract surgery per Medicare is $600/eye including 90 days of post-op care. What will cost you more is electing options like various laser-assisted techniques that are not presently considered least expensive standard of care, or something other than basic single vision distance implant lenses. Again, least expensive standard of care. The reason these surgeries are relatively lower cost is multiple, including they do not look for the same level of results as we do. Less equipment, s...

I'm sure someone with more brains and info than I has hypothesized about this, but one of the places that jobs have been disappearing for quite a while is jobs that kids under 18 can do. This includes stuff like part time retail work. This isn't just about the money. It's job experience and experience with random real life and being independent from your parents hovering over you. Who knew socio-economics could be so complicated? http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2017/04/the_response_to_the_retail_apocalypse_shows_which_workers_count_in_trump.html http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2017/04/the_response_to_the_retail_apocalypse_shows_which_workers_count_in_trump.html

Cherry blossoms at the History Museum (or whatever it's officially called).

Cherry blossoms at the History Museum (or whatever it's officially called). The building is actually the last remaining permanent structure from the 1901 Pan American Exposition. It's made of Vermont marble and it's all Neoclassical, and stuff. This is, I believe, officially referred to as the South Portico. The figures on the pediment represent forces of civilization. There are several kinds of cherry trees around it.

Trump's tweet in this makes me feel more like this is a Junior High or High School Popularity Contest/Election than an actual election about governance. Or maybe I just have unrealistic ideas about elections having anything to do with governance. http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/democrats-vs-trump/trump-rips-top-democrat-jon-ossoff-georgia-special-election-n747361 http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/democrats-vs-trump/trump-rips-top-democrat-jon-ossoff-georgia-special-election-n747361

Kathrine Switzer was the first woman to run with a number at the Boston Marathon. In 1967. She ran again today. Again, stories of strong women, or at least a woman who did a thing that made a difference. Tell us the real stories, including the guy who tried to physically remove her from the race and the guy who took him out so she could go on, unmolested. Not to mention the stupid reasons they kept women out in the first place. We need real role models, not just cleaned up perfect ones. http://www.npr.org/2017/04/16/524177413/first-woman-to-officially-enter-boston-marathon-will-run-it-again-50-years-later http://www.npr.org/2017/04/16/524177413/first-woman-to-officially-enter-boston-marathon-will-run-it-again-50-years-later
