omg my mom is delusional - she is complaining that the ridiculously expensive bed she bought against my dad's wishes so she could give their bed to my stupid uncle who no longer has it because he's in a nursing home and she gave it away which is fine because none of us would touch it after that unless it was fumigated anyway but i digress - and she is complaining about the fact that she can't sleep in this fancy expensive new bed now because of her spinal stenosis but she can't do anything about that because (she says) my dad likes the bed which has never been true he hates it and it is bad for his back and his hip and his knee and he has said so - her martyr complex is so deep I don't think deepwater horizon could find it - she's a fucking hero doing everything for everyone else

I wrote it down and calculated it. While shocked and appalled, it is suddenly clear to me why I may wish never to go anywhere near that woman ever again, and what some of the issues sucking my energy away may be. I may have issues I need to deal with, but once again, there is something significantly affecting me that is external. This is important, because I cannot control the external, neither am I responsible for it. But it is dragging me down. Years of counseling and I can finally start to grasp these wonderful insights. Now I just have to figure out what the hell to do with those insights. Ain't life grand? #dysfunctionjunction

She actually said, "Tell me if your father says anything about me." Mine is an hysterical laugh. Can we say 'triangulation'? I think it is reasonable to say that we are now at Defcon 2. Jiminy cthulu fishes. Why do I always have to be the adult?!? Not enough drugs in the world. ... end of line

Ion, that business with starting walking again with an eye to more?

Ion, that business with starting walking again with an eye to more? Well, I forgot about the toe thing. See, I learned the hard way that for some people, toes do weird stuff when you run. Fortunately, I forgot something when I was visiting Ann Arbor back then so stopped by the ridiculously upmarket running boutique near my sister's house where the manager person was like all knowledgeable, and stuff. We were talking and he was all you need toe caps! And so I did. No more lost toe nails for me. Also, less pain. It never occurred to me that if I was suddenly going to start up with this stuff again but just walking, not running, maybe I should put the toe caps on. I was wrong; I definitely should have put the toe caps on. Because I was walking, not running, I will probably not lose the nail. There's just a huge bruised looking thing that's way sore and makes it hard even to walk. Lesson learned. As soon as it feels ok enough to give it a shot, the toe caps are goin' on eve...

Chris Collins, folks.

Chris Collins, folks. Another fine representative of the long-standing tradition where Republicans fight for States' Rights. Except for when they disagree with them. Then they try to pass Federal legislation that will totally override the States' ability to govern themselves. http://www.wkbw.com/news/collins-introduces-legislation-aimed-at-repealing-safe-act http://www.wkbw.com/news/collins-introduces-legislation-aimed-at-repealing-safe-act

'This is That' is a Canadian satire news show that I find very funny. If you didn't know it was satire, you could mistake some of their stuff for actual news. I was very tickled by this bit on the radio today. Not only is it reminiscent of early 'Portlandia', one of the guys is doing an awfully close to Kermit the Frog news voice here. Positive, because somebody is speaking out, trying to do science, and proposing substantive active cultural change and intervention. Angry, because why do we wait until somebody dies? How do you reconcile this with the idiots who just voted to roll back work hour restrictions? Hypocrisy everywhere with what we impose on the profession versus what we recommend to patients not in the profession. None of this is new, but the medical boards and the peculiar medical machismo continue to push a culture of you are weak if you have a normal reaction to stress; you are a danger to patients - which is not so much a concern for patients but code for lawsuit alert , and this physician could make us look bad!; and if you can't handle it, get out! I took a 90 minute mental health break and went to the Lebanese festival. Pigged out on kibbe, labni, fresh made sajj with zaatar, and danced a little. I brought home two enormous sized cookies - one maamoul, and one apricot filled sort of shortbread/sugar cookie. They make them the size of 3 cookies combined for this festival. Anyway, it was nicer than being at the house.

I need another word for that that is not that word. Days when my mother is inappropriately dealing with her stress by projecting it at other people and being verbally abusive is too long. Any suggestions?

Omg. Apropos of nothing that has explicable context, I just realized something.

Omg. Apropos of nothing that has explicable context, I just realized something. I had a boss at one point who I really had trouble describing the skillfully political slime that he was. He was so good, that he'd say something and everyone knew what was really going on, and yet if you tried to transcribe it out of context it would sound totally innocuous. He was also apparently verbally very abusive to his fellows, although never to me. He was dangerous, powerful, rich, and made sure he would progressively be more of the same. But I could never figure out quite how to describe some of what made it so uncomfortable to deal with him. It finally hit me. The description of Dolores Umbridge in the books, not the movies, as a large, pale toad. Always calculating, always slimy, and very much that description. Except that instead of having eyes that were always very wide open, they were much more like certain real toads, with that lidded, calculating look. He was one of those people with wh...

One last time: It is worth noting that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, of Kentucky, refused to invite any of the five women GOP senators to join the health care working group he convened to write the Senate legislation despite public criticism for the group's all-male membership. Your enforcement officers who are supposed to be trained, among other things, to interdict drugs, don't know anything about drugs? And yet they knew enough to know that what the kid had were drugs? So they made him take them? On top of which, he did, which suggests to me that he didn't truly know what he was carrying. Pro tip: do not swallow concentrated liquid methamphetamine. A really excellent illustration of the issues with the oil sands/bitumen products being shipped in increased amounts through Vancouver. Other than minor kudos for trying to create a German worthy compound word - disincentivize - if there are so many qualified people just dying to serve, why is it that divesting assets is such a burden? And if you don't like paperwork, you do not want to work in government. Even if everything was streamlined to an ideal, there would still be paperwork, and oversight, and ETHICS. Scaramuccia (literally "little skirmisher"), also known as Scaramouche or Scaramouch, is a stock clown character of the Italian commedia dell'arte. The role combined characteristics of the zanni (servant) and the Capitano (masked henchman). Usually attired in black Spanish dress and burlesquing a don, he was often beaten by Harlequin for his boasting and cowardice. https://www.britannica.com/topic/Scaramouche https://www.britannica.com/topic/Scaramouche

"Completing antibiotic courses is a medical advice myth that may make bacterial resistance worse ..." "Rule that patients must finish antibiotics course is wrong, study says" "You need not always complete full course of antibiotics ..." Here's the problem (ok, problems): 1. It's a think piece, not a study. The hypothesis may be valid, but you don't test hypotheses by throwing them out into the wild and just seeing what happens. 2. We already have problems with people taking medication as prescribed. Even for short, 3-day courses of medication people can't stick to it. 3. Those headlines are going to lead people to simply choose not to take antibiotics as prescribed, if at all. They are going to lead to both random supplies of unused antibiotics being saved and used later without consulting a doctor, and people ar...

- locked - I walked two miles today. It's pretty pathetic that in 2 years I've gone from running 5K to walking 2 miles being an accomplishment. One that is already causing ouchies, of course. I mean, I know this is because I got depressed and literally was having trouble moving, period, so did not exercise at all at one point. Well, except that I kept doing yoga at least twice a week. Until that started really trashing my hip, which is really part of the whole lower back, glute, piriformis, flexor, yadda yadda yadda thing. Which is what is the problem with the walking. I need to go see the chiropractor again and get adjusted to see if it helps at all. It usually does, but it takes a while and it's sore in the meantime. Oh, and the bed I have to sleep in is pretty bad news, too, but there's nothing I can do about that at present. It would help the back and hip a lot to have a better bed. So, anyway, I walked two miles today.

Scouting can be very valuable, but we need to stop worshiping the 1950's. It's not clear in the article, so here's the actual text of the guidance issued before the speech by BSA. Basically, make sure your scouts and their families don't turn this into a political rally, and use this as a teaching moment about respecting your fellow Scouts: As a unit leader or staff member, you can help make the president’s visit a success by ensuring that any reactions to the president’s address are, as we state in our Scout Law, friendly, courteous, and kind. This includes understanding that chants of certain phrases heard during the campaign (e.g. “build the wall,” “lock her up”) are considered divisive by many members of our audience, and may cause unnecessary friction between individuals and units. Please help us ensure that all Scouts can enjoy this historical address by making sure that your troop members are respectful not only of the president, but of the wide variety of viewpo...

Weird ruminations about bread:

Weird ruminations about bread: So, the other day I went to this bakery that makes really good, mostly older or more European style breads to pick up a loaf of something to try. It's about 30 minutes away. Anyway, I've had some of their other stuff and it's quite good. However, it's pricey. Except I was thinking about this. While it may or may not be more nutritionally valuable than buying something at the grocery store bakery, it's definitely more expensive and less convenient. Thing is, it's a small business, it's relatively local, and they do try to cooperatively support other local or regional businesses, like where they get their grains and such. And if you think about how much it probably ought to cost for a loaf of bread, accounting for if you get grain from a family farm, and so on all the way up the chain, and the baker makes bread in older ways that take more time (like up to 2 days for some types), and you don't get any of the economies of scal...

I then briefly heated that up in some of the tomato sauce I made last fall from some of the giant yellow with red stripes heirloom tomatoes, garlic, and olive oil to saute the garlic. That's all that's in the sauce and it's delicious. I sprinkled it with shredded romano cheese when I ate it. Is very tasty and healthy and stuff.
