The Tiffany mosaic in the Marquette bldg.

Image
The Tiffany mosaic in the Marquette bldg. A fanciful interpretation of the life of Pere Marquette, French Jesuit and explorer of the Great Lakes and upper Mississippi. Amazing detail and design if probably lacking a certain accuracy of representation. This mosaic does use various forms of Tiffany glass, including feathers made of a specific form of rippled glass and three dimensional glass and “jewels”. Particularly unique in this mosaic is the use of shells to represent ... shells in the breastplate of the native persons. I also found the specific choice of purple cabochons in the church insignia a fine point of detail. The other thing that I found impressive was the use of the glass types, sizes, and placement to create the identifiably different tree barks. Like you can clearly identify the birch trees.

I made it into the Rookery!

I made it into the Rookery! Sort of. G+ ate my post though so it’s Frank Lloyd Wright’s lobby, it’s innovative and pretty and if you really want to see the building apparently you have to take an official tour. I snuck in up to a point but wasn’t gonna try and get all the way upstairs with all the guards around. Enjoy.

The many faces of The Bean. Snowy bean, crowded bean, bean through the trees, sun setting over the bean.

The kids room.

Image
The kids room. Originally one room split into two - girls on one side with a shared bed, boys on the other side. The boys had folding cots that they put away in the wall cabinets during the day. The walk-in closet in the last two pics was between the kids’ and the adults’ bedrooms. It created a barrier while still allowing the parents direct access. #FLWhouse

Oops. These are the dining room windows.

The dining room.

Image
The dining room. Innovative at the time because no elaborate Victorian deco and chandelier. His term for what he created instead is a “light screen”. It removes the various candles on the table and the hanging fixture from blocking people’s interaction at the table. He also eschewed the elaborate wall decoration and ran the tiles from the floor up around the fireplace. The windows do have that pretty fish-scale glass pattern. The last pics are the pantry. I think. #FLWhouse

The Tiffany mosaic ceiling at Marshall Fields Macy’s.

The Tiffany mosaic ceiling at Marshall Fields Macy’s. The top floors of which they are rumored to be selling off. They better keep public access to this, and not just from the ground floor. Harumph.

This is ... inexplicable. Other than that it is by the big Christmas tree by the ice rink in Millennium Park.

Scary statue staring at you from the top of the board of trade (I think). Or maybe it’s a Metron and I should be looking for something with which to make a rudimentary lathe ...
