Hippo Gnu Deer

Oh, hello, Lake Effect Snow.
Lord save me from whiny teenagers. How did we not all end up terminated before the age of 17?
It is unwarm here, and getting unwarmer.

I mentioned we went and saw Big Hero 6.

I mentioned we went and saw Big Hero 6 .  I was not familiar with its print form prior to seeing the movie, which is probably not relevant since they seem to bear little relation to each other. That said, it was a super awesome fun time movie, and my sister and I have been walking around saying "ba-da-la-da-la" to each other a lot. P.S. More or less obligatory cameo was amusingly handled.
Happy St. Thomas Becket Day. #random

Well, I saw Battle of the Five Armies; because I had to.

Well, I saw Battle of the Five Armies; because I had to. It's a thing. I absolutely loved real mythology and old linguistics and Tolkien as a kid. I felt like I had to, even if it was only in memory of.  If there was no such thing as The Hobbit, it could have been a sort of very expensive fantasy adventure B-movie. Mostly, it just kind of seemed like teen fanfic. Of course, that could have been because as we were watching it we kept commenting on which MMORPG, video game, comic, other fantasy/SF movie, etc. it was momentarily channelling. Not to mention the LOTR The Movie callbacks. Are spoilers possible? Meh. I suppose so. Especially since  reading the book will not help you. I am seriously disappointed in you Guillermo del Toro. Is that enough space? Hope so. Billy Connolly loves being a Highland Scot character. He was one of the few moments I was genuinely amused, in addition to being one of the non-book things that didn't seem like a bad idea. I mean, Dain is obviously in t...

The Holiday that was:

Image
The Holiday that was: -My sister got in late Tuesday night, following which she and I went to the big fancy Presbyterian church Christmas Eve Lessons and Carols service, which was preceded by a concert of Vivaldi's Gloria (see pic). It's a very pretty church, with a painted ceiling and walls (you couldn't see the stained glass at night so well). They started with Once in Royal David's City , obs. Had a few interesting things I hadn't heard, o/w familiar carols, some Messiah excerpts, some Lauridsen (seemingly mandatory the last 10 years in any church choir). There was an interesting arrangement of the words to one of the verses of Hark, the Herald Angels Sing . Either somebody had a very weird printing error, or the Presbyterian hymnal rearranges that one verse, for some reason. They closed with everyone singing Silent Night while holding lit candles with all the other church lights off, which was cool. Then we tried not to get blown away by the 60 mph wind gusts ...

Apparently you cure my mother of illness by suggesting in word, thought, or deed that you threaten her total control.

Apparently you cure my mother of illness by suggesting in word, thought, or deed that you threaten her total control. I know she's really sick. I know we all get a little weird when we're that sick. But, seriously? I am a horrible human being for pointing out that it isn't really helpful for the person who is ill to be washing the dishes and doing the laundry if they are coughing all over the meanwhile. Yes, I am aware that when you are the only person who can take care of yourself, you do that. But there are other people here, and it is important to try to help not share the illness. Also, it's ok for you to let other people do things for 12 whole contiguous hours. She's upset that I went grocery shopping and she didn't know about it (because she couldn't tell me how, when, where, and what.) The name may be silly, but that's never stopped anyone. Egg Nog recipe attributed to George Washington (the place I got it suggested about a dozen eggs, but Washington didn't write down that part, it would seem.) I like the last instruction the best. -  One quart cream, one quart milk, one dozen tablespoons sugar, one pint brandy, 1/2 pint rye whiskey, 1/2 pint Jamaica rum, 1/4 pint sherry—mix liquor first, then separate yolks and whites of eggs, add sugar to beaten yolks, mix well. Add milk and cream, slowly beating. Beat whites of eggs until stiff and fold slowly into mixture. Let set in cool place for several days. Taste frequently.

I am pretty appalled by the reported statements that Mayor de Blasio (and some others) are at fault and responsible for the murder of the two NYPD police officers. That is not the way to deal with your anger over being verbally and physically assaulted by protestors. And if you think the protests were the only reason this happened, that's very unfortunate and lacking in insight.

Could someone clarify for me?

Could someone clarify for me? I was under the impression that Sony was an international company based in Japan. Why then does it seem that this incident is being presented as an American problem? Or is that just because our news reporting sometimes skews things a bit? Or did the hackers exclusively poke around and attack just servers physically based inside the U.S., or only threaten movie-goers in the US, or something I haven't bothered to pay attention to that very particularly makes it a US issue? I'm just curious, because I feel like I've missed something.

Yet another study has come out saying limiting resident work hours has not increased patient safety and may even be harming some patients. I am not even bothering to look at the original studies, right now. But wait! They do say it has improved resident well-being. I have a lot of thoughts about this, too many to cram even into a tl;dr g+ post. Basically, I am skepticant. Frex, work hours are legally restricted for many professions, such as airline pilots and truck drivers, and this is based on studies that show impairment in cognition, function, and so forth. The medical establishment itself puts out or helps with studies showing the effects of sleep deprivation and high stress levels. It would seem that those results don't show up (or aren't statistically significant) in studies on residents and their working conditions. We must be some special snowflakes, boy.

I apparently missed this last year, likely due to the fog of war on cancer at the time. It seems it was covered in numerous big-time journalism type things, you know, newspapers and stuff, as well as on teh webs. The company they are lambasting still exists, I am simultaneously unsurprised and appalled to note. Anyway, the Jezebel post fulfills my need for amusement inducing snark and righteousness. Unusually, the comments are even more fun (mostly). My favorite comment excerpt: While reviews used to read like entertaining anecdotes from your witty friends, the majority became either overly-fawning mad-libs peppered with twee portmanteaus (amazeballs!) or poorly cobbled together strings of insecure argle bargle by middle management types who seem to require grief counseling after receiving a sugar-free vanilla latte that wasn't just so. I guess I can't access the actual Congressional Quarterly, so I'll just cut and paste the summary I read.

I guess I can't access the actual Congressional Quarterly, so I'll just cut and paste the summary I read. My favorite part is excerpted first. My signal thought is, really, who knew!? Like this info hasn't been out there for decades. Since I can't access the real article, they may mention many things, but in case they didn't ... Not only did OMG, LOW FAT turn into make low fat processed foods taste acceptable, which meant a lot of carbs, but it also demonized ALL FAT indiscriminately. We know that's wrong, now. We also know that what is or is not a "good" or "bad" fat is far more complex. So, yeah, it's about time to re-examine data-lacking guidelines from the 1970's . some nutritionists argue that “the Dietary Guidelines’ emphasis on reducing saturated fat prompted food makers to remove fats and replace them with refined carbohydrates, or sugars, to compensate for the loss of taste,” thereby unintentionally increasing obesity rates. ...

I'm sure this bears closer scrutiny, but:

I'm sure this bears closer scrutiny, but: The underlying notion in both bills, however, has also been criticized over concerns that, by extending data exclusivity beyond the existing timeframes, the law could slow the introduction of lower-cost generic versions of many drugs. Consequently, prices would remain higher, an issue that Express Scripts chief medical officer Steve Miller raised at a congressional hearing last year. I'm sorry. Is this the same industry (generic drug manufacturers) that has raised its prices so much in the last 2-5 years (hey, we're the only ones making this anymore, whoopee!) that there was a Congressional hearing about it last month? http://blogs.wsj.com/pharmalot/2014/12/15/senate-bill-offers-15-years-of-data-exclusivity-for-drugs-for-unmet-needs/ http://blogs.wsj.com/pharmalot/2014/12/15/senate-bill-offers-15-years-of-data-exclusivity-for-drugs-for-unmet-needs

Oh, hello, crusading informing, again. Per CDC, rates of Chlamydia and Gonorrhea are decreasing, while rates of Syphilis are increasing. Most affected as an age group, those between 15-24. (I want to check that data for a second peak, though, because for a while there was quite the surprise in residents of assisted/long-term care facilities. Yup. Not dead yet.) Anyway, this is preventable. Use condoms, etc. Get tested, blah blah. And now for something not so completely different, I shall endeavor to show you a righter way and a not so right way to communicate about these things. Which is mostly just to say that we are really all kind of totally clueless sometimes about how affected by our cultural filters and upbringing we are.*  The not so good way of communicating occurs in the Huffypost Editorial ( http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-jonathan-mermin/std-testing_b_6335646.html ). Dad is feeling pretty awful.

Dad is feeling pretty awful. Recovering from chemo is almost as bad as the chemo sometimes. I managed to get him to come with me for lunch and we went to the place I found where you can get misc cuisine. We had Laotian and Burmese food for lunch, and he enjoyed it, so I will count that as a small win.

Tried something new (which may be because it is a new product, don't know).

Tried something new (which may be because it is a new product, don't know). Trader Joe's has a gingerbread baking mix, which can be used to make many forms of gingerbread. I went for the cookies. Which obviously started out as gingerpersons. Then the inevitable not enough dough left for that cut-out, so made thinner tiny snowflake cut-outs. Then the very last bits got flattened into tiny circles. Or, you know, if you want to go for a holiday thing, reindeer droppings. Anyway, the thicker ones came out nice and chewy, the thinner ones nice and crispy. And the spice level in this mix is excellent, aromatic and tasty without overdoing it. Unless you like bland gingerbread. In which case we have nothing to discuss, because you probably like that stuff they call ginger ale instead of ginger beer. It is a little on the buttery side, ok, a lot, so you absolutely have to refrigerate it to work with it as cookie dough. I did it overnight, then let it thaw a little at room temp. You do n...

My dad made it through 11/14 days of chemo, with decreased treatment days 10 & 11. He did get his eyes checked, and the general inflammation reaction, although it was making them red and swollen, did not affect the inside of his eyes or the eyeballs themselves, which is very good. He is starting to heal, now, but it will be a long time and he still feels awful, although relatively better, and doesn't look so good, either. He kind of lost his appetite toward the end but has been willing to try to eat something once a day, like, at least a piece of bread with peanut butter or an apple. #fsckcancer

State of the Dad: Finally got him to let me try something. It helped. How badly was he feeling? He told my mom yes, she could call his doctor. Which turned out well, since it turned out the doctor had called back, but not us. Oops. Hope he didn't leave any personal info on the answering machine of whomever he called. And it was their office that miscommunicated the info internally leading to the phone message we did get that I found so irksome. They're still only going to see him Thursday, but I feel a tiny bit less ill toward them. The other doctor's office that hadn't called back still hasn't called back which is not making me think well of them. Seriously? He's calling because he wants your help managing side effects so he can stay on the stuff for the full course of treatment. Since you weren't being any bloody use at all, we've all decided he's decreasing rather than stopping so he can keep using something for at least maybe a little longer. P.S. Sigh. History. Originally shared by Picturemation Vighon Exodus to Canada Statehood for Oklahoma meant bad news for African-American residents: with the territory's new status came severe Jim Crow laws that dealt a blow to the rights of blacks. In 1911 ninety families, including these members of the Mapp family, left Oklahoma to settle in Amber Valley, located in the province of Alberta, Canada. The same year, the Canadian government adopted a complete ban on black immigration, making African-descended peoples the first ethnic group barred from Canada by federal decree.

I am extremely disenchanted with this high efficiency washing machine. In oh so many ways.
I kinda want to see the Paddington Bear movie. I wish it were coming out for Christmas.

All I want for Christmas is some antibiotics:

What the heck is Giving Tuesday?

What the heck is Giving Tuesday? Why think of others all year when you can think of them for just one day? Stop with the marketing, already.

As a legal matter, this may be a Free Speech case.

As a legal matter, this may be a Free Speech case. However, having read what the individual concerned posted to FB, it is identifiably abusive, violent, threatening, and dangerous. I think treatment and evaluation should be required, in a locked facility as needed until deemed non-threatening. If you were simply incarcerated without that, then perhaps the approach to sentencing in this case needs to be addressed. I don't think we should lock people up just for being stupid. Nonetheless, "It's a rap song" is the worst man-splaining I have ever heard. No. You were/are depressed and angry and you wanted to hurt your wife. You had specific and detailed descriptions for doing so. You threatened others. I am sorry you did not have someone in your life who said, "Whoa, dude. You need help. I am taking you to a minister/ counselor/ social worker/ doctor. NOW." Stating you would never really kill your wife is just part of the pathology, even if you lack that insight ...
Ion, Dad started more chemo today.
Heard interview with Michael Render (aka Killer Mike) on CNN. Very articulate, insightful, and thoughtful.

Yep.

Yep. Gas is still $3.15/gal or higher here. I suspect the politicians from the feds on down have been screwing with this area.
