I know about Gullah-Geechee culture because I was interested in Gershwin and the back story to Porgy and Bess. I had hoped someday to visit and learn more about and experience some of the culture first hand. It's also a living link with critically important American history and culture. I had no idea how bad this situation was.

Notwithstanding the involvement of some people with ties to the community, this smacks very strongly to me of white privilege. I mean, Jesus of Nazareth, people. They're calling some of the developments "plantations"! In South Carolina, for the love of little fishes. This isn't irony, it's offensive. Where are all the people who jump up and try to preserve our country's historical treasures? I know just by writing this I'm also exercising privilege, but I find it so disturbing that there isn't a public hue and cry to preserve this. (Which I think could be done without completely shutting off all development and progress, btw.)
