I will bet you anything that Trump doesn't actually think anybody in this day and age takes expressions like "son of a bitch" literally. I'd bet most people don't. But I'll bet it's verrry different if you grew up black, or poor and black. Privilege - it's everywhere. Even in swearing.

It used to be universal that you didn't mess with somebody's mom. Guess that's just another standard we can drive over in the mud.

  1. Even if I didn't take "son of a bitch" as anything but a generically crude insult, that doesn't change how unbelievably inappropriate and crass it is for the alleged leader of the free world to use it on his own citizens.

Because, look, I am the last person in the world to be able to throw stones for using profanity. The difference is, I am not speaking for (and to) hundreds of millions of people. I can swear like a truck driver and not impugn the image or dignity of anyone but myself. The President of the fucking United States cannot.

  2. Son of a bitch seems less divorced from its meaning than "bastard", even though they're both questioning parentage. If nothing else, I suppose the fact that "bitch" sec also is still in use would probably ensure that.

  3. I also don't think Trump would care if he did know he was insulting their mothers. In fact, I'm not sure he wouldn't consider that a feature.
