Maybe this is poor reasoning, but I really feel that if the Catholic church would just say it was a matter of personal conscience and not an excommunicable sin, and stop indoctrinating people thusly, we could get rid of ignorance in our society and a lot of stupid laws that are abusive of women.

They are a huge organization and do have influence in certain areas and this is a critically important one if they care at all about women as human beings.
