I'm sure someone with more brains and info than I has hypothesized about this, but one of the places that jobs have been disappearing for quite a while is jobs that kids under 18 can do. This includes stuff like part time retail work. This isn't just about the money. It's job experience and experience with random real life and being independent from your parents hovering over you. Who knew socio-economics could be so complicated?

  1. Were there ever any jobs that black urban kids under 18 could do? I wonder if there's a correlation between that and, say, gangs.

  2. Yes and no. If you were in a neighborhood or could get to a neighborhood with a McDonalds, or a shopping mall, or a paper route, or babysitting, or doing odd jobs for people (shoveling snow, mowing grass) then they could do the same jobs as anybody.

In places where there were not enough jobs in their neighborhood, or it wasn't safe in their neighborhood and there was no public transport to get to the jobs outside their neighborhood, then no.

I'm sure there are many opinions to be found about gangs. Some of it's probably even proper research, but I'd have to look it up.
