Personally, I'd argue that a lot of this also has to do with a real inability for Americans as a whole to see or act in any kind of long term fashion. What do I get now and how much do I get? This bodes ill for schools, infrastructure, and other things that require multi-decades long visions and plans. Not to mention the accompanying price tags.
