tl;dr Old fashioned vote buying but with much worse implications than a direct exchange of cash. Trump will literally destroy this country just to get votes and keep lying and promoting his own ignorance and his rich "friends". And people will keep voting for him out of manipulated self-interest.
1) We grow too much corn. Very little is used for food and this does not benefit the small family farmer the agriculture lobby would like us to think it does. It benefits the giant conglomerates like ADM. Not to mention a lot of our farmland isn't even American owned anymore.
2) Monsanto directly or indirectly controls essentially all of the corn 'seed' in this country (possibly the world). Another conglomerate benefiting from growing more corn, but not any ordinary American farmers or American seed companies.
3) Ethanol is damaging to the insides of most cars. Sure, some of the newest cars were built with this in mind, but there are still a large number of people who drive vehicles more than a couple of years old. Ethanol can be corrosive over time. Also, there have been tests showing that E15 reduces gas mileage, so you have to buy more gas.
4) Corn as it is generally grown as a non-food commercial crop takes more out of the soil than it puts in. It is also a crop that uses up a lot of water, and big commercial interests don't care if they are using up aquifers. To make up for what is taken out of the soil, commercial fertilizer is generally used. That gets into the groundwater, rivers, etc. Then, the water that's left is contaminated.
5) I don't think people in corn growing country are stupid, but I think they are like most people everywhere - they are focused on their self-interest as they have been influenced to see it. Even if they have not been influenced, they work in the corn industry and it literally is their life - their job, their home, their kids - and people get myopic about their own short term interests. Most of us aren't good at the long view. Plus, Trump et al have leveraged making people hate and fear anyone from anywhere else. They keep stoking this, so even if people might care about balancing their own interests with the interests of a larger society, that has now become a traitor who hates America.
