So Trump was all photo op and whatnot at the big table today.

So Trump was all photo op and whatnot at the big table today. As noted many places, he made lots of great statements with his huge vocabulary. I've thought about it, and I finally realized why this one particularly struck me:

“The dilemma is that if you’re weak, if you’re weak, which some people would like you to be. If you are really, really pathetically weak, the country’s going to be overrun with millions of people,” Mr. Trump said. “And if you’re strong, then you don’t have any heart. That’s a tough dilemma. Perhaps I’d rather be strong.”

In my prior position, I had one of the key people I worked with/for (a very senior person) ask me as a teaching moment whether it was more important to be respected or liked. I gotta say, I always find things like this to be perturbing, because I don't see them as binaries. However, I get it, now.

Strong people are respected, weak people are liked. Not really an ethos I was raised with. In this specific situation it was also code for misogyny and verbally abusive behavior - aka "strong" and "respected". Anyway, I get it now. And it's even worse than my then feeling of something wrongness.
