Rudy Galindo is great. I don't know if I even knew he had been Kristi Yamaguchi's partner! I went the the Champions on Ice show a few different times and he was one of the people who got the most applause - I'm not sure how much of that was because of his showmanship and how much was because of it being his home town.
ReplyDeleteI remember watching him skate in his first Olympics. I wrote a big long thing about it, but the real point is that I feel like he was the first (and maybe only) skater that I felt was an artist, whose art happened to also be a "sport." He had the skill to succeed as an athlete, but he chose to use that to tell a bigger story and a stronger message. The commentators are usually the ones who get to tell the story, to entertain the audience and explain the scores, etc., but you didn't really need that with him. He truly put it out on the ice for everyone. I was just a kid, but I found it really powerful.
