Also, this is the most ignorant thing I've ever heard:

Dude. They're a natural reservoir for this herpes virus. You know, in the wild. Yes, it's much more likely that there would be an outbreak when animals are in closer conditions than presumably occur in the wild, but it happens. An overly optimistic estimate is 50/50 that these Ibex would be healthy and happy if they'd been left in the wild. "Nature's course" is not so nice.

They're also an endangered species, well, one step from, and zoos are probably one of the few places that might be able to help preserve the species.
