This will not make anything better about the Jemele Hill thing.
This will not make anything better about the Jemele Hill thing. But it is revealing about just how pervasive some attitudes are. They're just there - quiet, subconscious, until something like this stirs them up.
For example, it is particularly bothersome to read someone comparing the use of "Chink" to "bigot" and "white supremacist". As if there is anything remotely consistent or equivalent between:
a racial epithet, something subjective, laden with every possible ignorant assumption and stereotype, meant to demean and denigrate and invalidate, and the word bigot or phrase white supremacist. Both of which are descriptive nouns with clear definitions that can be supported or countered based on factual evidence. Neither of which has ever been used as a slur.
She didn't call him a cracker, or a honky, or a gringo, or a round-eye, etc. Just in case that person, who isn't reading this, would like to know what might have been equivalent to "chink".
