Let me help with some of this:
1) If you are suddenly going to have ethics, you have to kick out Cosby and Polanski, as well. If this means you're going to have to kick yourselves out, as well, then this is a hint that you people ALL need to make a radical change asap.
2) There is and there isn't a difference between "just abuse" and assault and rape. Rape is a specific form of violence, particularly though not exclusively aimed at women. It is criminal and should be treated as such. It's not that hard, folks.
When they say assault here, I presume they are being very narrow and talking about sexual assault. It doesn't matter. If it meets qualifications to be charged under criminal statues, see above. If it doesn't meet prosecution standards, see following re: abuse.
Further, all violent, threatening, and abusive behavior is traumatic and is abuse. I know what the writer is trying to do, but they are wrong. Verbal abuse is real. Emotional abuse is real. Mental abuse is real. I will say it again, this IS abuse.
It is, again, very simple. You stop saying this is ok. A few people may actually have issues that require treatment for uncontrolled rage, or personality disorder spectrum issues, etc. Statistically, even if all these people concentrated in Hollywood and environs, an awful lot of them are acting this way only because it's been made clear that this behavior is not only tolerated, but encouraged as part of your mystique. They can stop. Anyone who says they can't is full of it.
Lastly, but importantly, there are quiet reports that Weinstein WAS an abuser before he was a sexual abuser and predator. That he physically abused in the regular, gee, that's not so bad, he just beat people up way (#sarcasm). He continued to do that, along with verbal abuse, and emotional abuse, and sexual abuse and rape.
You don't wait and excuse or ignore the other abusive behavior and then only get upset when it totally not unexpectedly turns into rape. This is why, although I understand the distinction the reporter is making and what is important about it, you don't make rape a special case and the only "real" abuse. It's all "real" abuse and none of it should be tolerated or encouraged.
3) You're all personally pissed at Harvey Weinstein. Don't make that an excuse to walk away and keep doing the same thing as soon as it's out of the headlines.
