Too tired to deal with sorting links and hoping a few are "reliable sources" like, what even does that mean, anymore.
Too tired to deal with sorting links and hoping a few are "reliable sources" like, what even does that mean, anymore. Anyway. Voice of America had some kind of governing board that was supposed to try to prevent issues, of which there were some under the W Bush admin, but the board was gotten rid of. Now, there's a CEO or something like it and the Trumpeters have replaced or put in place two yutes who were loyalists during the campaign.
Both seem to be far over to the right. One of them seems to have a history of being involved in far right radio, the other moved to NH as part of something that was a deliberate program to get enough libertarians to move to NH to, I guess, use it as a base to spread their philosophy nationwide?
So, obs, concerns that this will turn into the Trump Network and promote the Trump Truth. On the one hand, that's sort of rich considering VOA only exists because it was a cold war propaganda tool (correct me if that's wrong). Otoh, people weren't keen on its spinny spin under W Bush that was, I guess, unbalanced even for a propaganda tool.
Oh, and it used to just broadcast overseas. Probably the most concerning kicker is that it can now broadcast at home, right here in the US of A. So not only will we have the usual suspects complaining on hyper conservative radio, of which there is no lack, we will have a government backed, government funded radio station promoting the Trump view, the Trump agenda, and the Trump Truth.
Some people will feel that this is finally a good use of their tax dollars. Some will not. Some of us will find yet more WWII, Cold War, misc totalitarian real-world and random dystopian literature references and hope the drugs the government starts putting in the water are really good.
(Before you say nobody listens to radio anymore, realize there are a lot of places in this country where people listen to radio. Places where it's hard to get consistent internet, or people can't afford internet, or devices that stream, etc. And they are listening and calling in and etc. It's a potentially very useful tool for reaching these people as the official US gov't radio. Plus, these are youngsters running it, now. They may finally drag VOA into the 21st century and get it streaming.)
