I swear there was something somewhere in the documents of the founding fathers that essentially said people were too stupid and uneducated to be allowed to govern themselves, hence the actually very limited voting rights in the original constitution. Of course, some of them also were into the idea of making education more widely available on the theory that it would, I don't know, educate people and make them better citizens?

ReplyDeleteJefferson thought (and said, loudly) that his ideal model of government was a revolutionary change every generation-- every twenty to thirty years. Adams merely pointed at France, 1789, in very eloquent horror.
Adams always struck me as having the better sense of it.
