Free from the repeat inspection nonsense.

Free from the repeat inspection nonsense. Which mercifully cut short my being subjected to the women of the Today Show pretending to be being every 1950's stereotype of a helpless female in the woods. They gave them knives, and fishing line, and hooks, and weights and other stuff and they would all be dead within hours. Awesome example to the nation of functional, empowered females. Could we get some 10 year old Girl Scouts out here to mock this reinforcing of nonsense stereotypes by their mere competence and presence?

  1. Short answer: yes. I haven't watched it in years. It used to have, like, news and stuff on. Agreed that one does not have to have a particular set of skillz to be an empowered female, but it is irksome to watch people who are in a position to role model behaving as if they are all, oh, gosh, golly, gee, help, help, save me, my hero.

It's particularly irritating on the show that fired Ann Curry, who used to actually do stuff. Like film climbing Kilimanjaro and failing because altitude sickness and weather while reporting on the area, people, and culture. Or some of the other stuff she did for actual reporting purposes.

This was supposed to be a segment promoting a show called "Alone" on the History Channel, which is apparently some sort of survival show. That granted, they clearly set this up to look as inept and foolish as possible. Except it looks like what every stereotype of helpless women who can't handle this looks like. Which is stupid. At least set them up to look competent but inexperienced. This is just ridiculous stereotyping, writ large. Like, they might as well have just done it in inappropriate clothing, as well, because it wouldn't have been any more ridiculous.

They even commented in the wrap up that they "didn't know what they'd learned from this" but it (meaning "Alone") was a good show and you should watch it.
