Second posting of the day: Arvo Part's "Christmas Lullaby".
Second posting of the day: Arvo Part's "Christmas Lullaby". I have never sung this one. It was commissioned by Jordi Savall (who is a viol god, tyvm). Unfortunately, I don't like the link with his ensemble performing it because I am not fond of the sound of their vocal soloist on it. So I'm linking to a different group doing a lovely job of it.
Part is a (very) modern Estonian composer. If you are familiar with his work this may sound somewhat surprising to you because he beautifully evoked a very Baroque period sound in this piece. I had a hard time telling what language this was in, but according to one source I found it's written in Russian. I'm not sure why a commission from a Spaniard (Catalonian) for a Baroque ensemble from a composer who probably writes more in Latin and is paraphrasing or quoting the gospel of Luke ended up in Russian. Who knows.
