The first article is a little less sensational, but there's info in the second (that's on several reliable sites) that's not in the first. I have to say, I have a real problem with trophy hunting endangered animals. You aren't going to eat the meat, you aren't going to make clothing or useful tools out of the hide and bones; you're just killing for the adrenaline and seemingly you just leave the carcass to rot.

In this specific case, if the guides were professional, where were their permits? If they knew they were near protected land with collared animals, how did they not have some method to confirm whether or not an animal was from the reserve or collared prior to killing it? Ok, it seems you hunt lions in the dark (per comments in the article). How are you supposed to see well enough to make sure you are not randomly killing the wrong animals? If you can see well enough to shoot, how did you not see it was a black-maned lion, which per reports is rare and notable? Further, they apparently did a terrible job of hunting and only severely hurt the animal and it took two days to find it and kill it, which is cruel.

Lastly, the hunter in question supposedly does this all the time, all over the world. If he's such a great hunter, how is it he didn't know or didn't care to double check that all the appropriate paper work was in order? I don't believe he didn't know that he should extensively look into that before booking the hunt and again before actively hunting. It also doesn't speak well for him that he seems to have gotten into trouble in the US for illegal activity around shooting a black bear.

  1. I'd like to see some legislation that limited this whole industry. Like, not allowing the importation of their kills. And not allowing killing of endangered species for sport in this country.
