* It's official.

* It's official. This is the coldest February (here) on record since the official formation of the National Weather Service in 1870. Average daily temperature: 11.1 F. The last record was 1934 with 11.6.

* We have had 30 consecutive days below freezing, which ties for the fifth longest stretch of that (might get a few more days on that one, which could move us into 4th).

* This is only the second time since records were kept that the entire month of February was below freezing. Last time was 1978.

* And finally, we are tied for first place for the most days below zero (F) with 10.

* Out of random interest, our snow totals thus far are 102.7". We will never beat the record in that department, which was the winter of 1976-1977 (including the infamous blizzard of '77). That total was 199.4 inches of snow. That's ok. We wouldn't want to get greedy.

Good night, folks!

  1. As Amy Young said, if you gotta live through it, you may as well get some satisfaction out of it.

  2. We've had about five inches of snow and several weeks in the 50s. It's hard for me to work up much indignation over our current weather even if I DON'T have a coat.

  3. (Also, that "at least get some satisfaction from breaking the record" thing was how I survived the summer of, I think, '12, when we smashed the "most days above 100" record, and had some ridiculous number of days where it never dropped below 90 at night.)

  4. Yeah, I would definitely take this over that. There's no such thing as a coat that cools you off. Somebody should make one.

  5. F-L Silver On the flip side, heat doesn't trap you in the house if you're unable or unwilling to shovel or pay for same.

  6. But it's a dry heat :-)

    (but seriously, that makes a huge difference)

  7. Matt Schaefer ...since we have both kinds here (sometimes in the same week), I can vouch for that with extensive experience.

  8. They do tend to object when you try to sleep in movie theaters or at the grocery store, however. Plus, your food doesn't spoil if it's cold. You may have to use a chisel and suck on it, but it isn't going to go bad.
