  1. I'd not heard anything about this until TPM started reporting on it recently and just... I can't quite get my head around what congressional Republicans think they're doing fucking around with an election in another country? I thought that wasn't done (or if it was, nowhere near this blatantly/openly), though "that's not how we do things" hasn't exactly stopped said Republicans in many other circumstances.

Obama refusing to meet with Netanyahu was one of the possible consequences TPM had mentioned but Obama actually going that route seems to have surprised them.

  2. I gather that Boehner is acting well within his powers as Speaker to extend such an invitation to speak. However, the protocol apparently has always been the courtesy of consulting the White House before extending this sort of invitation.

I don't know what the Republicans are hoping for by playing this way. Or why a world leader would let themselves get used for it. Then again, Netanyahu may be playing election politics as much as anyone. Then again again, someone said Cameron was playing election politics and Obama met with him. I'm kind of disgusted by the whole thing.

I'm also waiting for someone to explain to me how anybody believes it's a good idea or benefits from Iran having nuclear power. Not that this has anything to do with this.

  3. Anytime something happens in the Mideast, I usually find a lot of value in seeing what Prof. Juan Cole's analysis is. On this issue as well:

As the apocryphal slogan attributed to neo-cons in the early 2000s goes:  Anyone can go to Baghdad. Real men go to Tehran.
