The most contemporary of those I would kind of classify that way, but I guess due to current popularity I can see why that one was included. I knew about the one essay, it's pretty famous and cannonical for its criticism. The other thing, I suspect, was part of some kind of published review or criticism, and the writer is pretty famous. The only reason I knew who FR Leavis was is because he's mentioned in Bridget Jones, and, whaddaya know, he's a real person!

It helps that I got into the whole Tolkien thing from the academic, Beowulf, linguistics side. I was a scary, scary little nerd-child.
