Yes, this has gone on before. No, it isn't new. But don't try to tell me that people thinking it's ok to do this has nothing whatsoever to do with the messaging and behavior of public figures and leaders. Looking at you, Fox News and Trump and his enablers. I've been using these.

I've never found ear buds that work for me. :( I think my ears are just too small, or something.
ReplyDeleteiOS or Android (and if Android, 1 or 3 button?)?
ReplyDeleteiOS - I thought ear buds kind of worked with everything?
ReplyDeleteF-L Silver nope. As they so often do, Apple made their own competing "standard" regarding multiple input via headphone-style plugs, and earbuds are of limited use in a cross-platform way. At any rate, for iOS device accessory reviews I usually point people at iLounge. If you're looking for something a bit more concise, I believe The Wirecutter has a relevant review as well.
ReplyDeleteEvan "Skwid" Langlinais except, of course, that it's actually android that made their own incompatible stuff in this particular case — Apple got there first.
ReplyDeleteJasper Janssen that is not what my research led me to understand.
ReplyDeleteHm. I'm pretty sure the one button headset, at least, has been with the iPhone from day one (which means a year or two before even Android 1.0). I do think the three button variant was pioneered by android sets — but then again ISTR that HTC and Samsung headsets weren't originally compatible either.
ReplyDeleteAha. Apparently Nokia had OMTP (with afaik a 2,5mm 4-pin jack, with TRRS being left/right/mic/gnd), and Apple made something called AHJ with 3.5mm TRRS and a left/right/gnd/mic pinout. That's a significant pinout difference for the audio part. Most smartphones are now AHJ.
ReplyDeleteI still can't find much about the various connections for various buttons — they probably short the mic line with various resistances or something.

ReplyDeleteThis seems to give a decent overview. Tl;dr: it's a fucking mess.
Yep, that is what my previous research turned up, as well. Basically, the contacts are the same, but the way Apple set up their input switching is different than everyone else.
