In 1917, following the Halifax Explosion, Boston sent a significant amount of aid our way. This strengthened an already powerful economic friendship into something even greater.

The Halifax Explosion, for those who don't know, was a result of a shipping accident in Halifax involving a munition ship. It was the largest man-made explosion in the world until the first nuclear bomb. The city was devastated.

It's tough for Nova Scotia to offer the same level of help to Boston in this era, things are so vastly different in many regards. But this is a great decision I solidly support..

Obviously, I didn't live through the Halifax Explosion, but for as long as I've been alive Nova Scotia has sent a Christmas tree to Boston as a way of saying thanks for their aid, and their help is something that was important to me. While I hate that the opportunity to reciprocate has presented itself, I'm glad my province stepped up to do it.

  1. The Halifax Explosion was almost contemporaneous with the great Boston Molasses Flood. Killed lots more people than those little bombs this week, did the molasses flood.

  2. I'm pretty sure the aid to Halifax resulted in Halifax sending us the Christmas tree that we light up every year in downtown Boston.
