After the second major costume disaster in ice dancing, I have to ask: why on earth are these costumes so skimpy and poorly engineered?
Firstly, you lose points for a costume issue per the rules. Basically, because it is a safety issue if sparklies or fabric bits end up on the ice; it's really dangerous.
Secondly, it is a 'thing' to engineer a skating costume. People who get paid thousands of dollars to do this know and understand this engineering. Why would any costume designer and skater sit down to discuss this and decide we don't need no stinking secure costumes! The forces from spinning alone could remove a bikini top.
It's super common for costumes to include flesh toned fabric. Sometimes rather a lot of it, pushing some of the rules about modesty, dignity, and appropriate for athletic competition (yeah, yeah, the original olympics were naked, oily guys). In any case, the forces on a skating costume are pretty significant, so having a snap, or a hook be the only thing between you and HELLO is illogical.
For real, people. Use some flesh toned fabric. It's just as sexy and you don't have to spend your whole routine trying not to end up topless.

I agree with most of what you wrote, but flesh toned fabric is definitely not just as sexy.
ReplyDeleteThey'd hardly have to use any more than they already do. I was actually surprised that many of the ice dance costumes used none. What did they think was going to keep those costumes on in case of emergency?
