I looked and it's so well known that it's on Wikipedia. Houston, we have a problem. Essure is causing problems, regardless of why, it's not all it was cracked up to be and the initial studies were, as suspected, way too short (but standard for what happens, not something unique).

Also, it's the fibers inside that are supposed to cause the inflammation. I'm guessing that was originally inspired by observing the body's response to various suture materials.

Anyway, looks like it's not the advance it was intended to be.

  1. Yeah. I honestly don't see what makes it better than surgical tubal ligation, other than maybe the dr doesn't have to be as trained.

  2. Any OB/Gyn who is being trained to do the Essure was already previously trained to do Ob/Gyn surgery. I think the issues were:

    1) didn't need general anesthesia
    2) didn't need external to internal incisions, i.e., major surgery

Both those things have very real risks to them. Of course, it turns out that the alternative isn't actually reducing the risks as much as it was hoped it would. Ahem.

  3. The inserts are made from polyester fibers, nickel-titanium and stainless steel and solder

    Solder?!?!?

Even if it's silver solder and not lead, that's still... whoa.
