Colleague - most abused word ever candidate.

Colleague - most abused word ever candidate.
Co-worker - possible relative synonym, except that implies work.
Things about which I have nothing nice to say - someone that is supposed to fall under either of those adjectives.

Rant Warning

Let me sum up - Unfortunately, they also had a paternal sudden illness, not fatal, but serious and now resolving well. They also were given permission to go home to spend time with and so forth.  Divergence x 2 - faculty bought them a ticket to go home, and they have decided not to come back.  We have fallen off the compassion ledge.

Let me explain - This isn't a contest, but this amounts to an I'd rather get paid for 3 weeks I'm not working and spend it on a beach in the Caribbean, and conveniently blow off 2 weeks of call I'm supposed to cover. Not because someone is still in danger, but I can get away with it, so I am.

No one bought me a plane ticket, and I could have done the same thing. I didn't for 2 major and 1 minor reason. One, there's a little time left and if I wrap things up here now, it will allow me to focus on the time I have left with people with fewer distractions. Two, thinking about it all the time is not helping, while being busy with other things gives me a break so it's not the only thing I think about. Lastly, an obviously archaic and misplaced sense of commitment and responsibility, which makes me a chump, not an adult, based on what I've seen over and over at this point.

I've had one conversation about not covering all the rest of call, which still leaves me totally screwed over, but I feel very little compunction about it at this point. And, rather than the section head doing it, I was told I have to have the conversation with one specific faculty member where I get to tell him that I'm not seeing his patients for him. This should go well (insert sarcasm here).

Hate might not be an inaccurate description of my feelings at the moment.
