This is absolutely fucked. In so. many. ways.

This accident shows the inherent risk of taking control of critical systems away from humans without their knowledge, and the unforseen consequences of increasingly complex systems.

How about you not take control away from the humans and maybe only have that stuff as a back-up if the humans fail??

  1. How about we get rid of the humans as soon as technically feasible? We are responsible for between 75 and 80% of aviation accidents.

(This one wasn't their fault since the system was changed without their knowledge, and is a bad example. The general point remains.)

  2. I'm guessing I have a different perspective on flying since I grew up in small and experimental aircraft. It's generally very safe. Not that there weren't stupid accidents - a guy who installed his nose wheel the wrong way comes to mind. Most of my exposure was to people in the Sully mode, though.

The issue of training and seat time is, however, a real one. Airlines got used to having ex-military, i.e. already highly trained and experienced pilots to draw on. That hasn't been true for a while, and they don't want to pay what it costs to train pilots properly, never mind pay them decent salaries and have reasonable working hours to get them enough seat time.

Which might explain the thing in the Wall Street Journal about something something Boeing sold the plane by telling people they didn't need specific training in this new version because it was just like the old version, and it was too much info for pilots, or something. I mean, you always need training in new versions of planes. Maybe the reporting is wrong (it happens), but that would be somebody assuming too much about their systems being smarter than pilots.

Lastly, this airline doesn't exactly have a great reputation, iirc. They were banned from Europe or some such until recently, I"m pretty sure. That strongly supports your point about humans not doing things properly, but it's about much more than the pilots.
