This is from when I went to see The Movie. This is why I went to this particular showing, as well. This is the nerd movie theater around here, and they made a point of having stuff going on Saturday as well as Thursday of opening weekend. Sadly, I did not record the working BB-8 that one of the Fan Force had made and was rolling around visiting and 'chatting' with people. The, I presume, magnets were having some issues, though, and if anything jarred the poor little droid his head came off. It went right back on, though. I apologize for my potato selfie, but the Storm Trooper looks great! The second picture is the young lady who eventually won the kids' costume contest - Jingle all the Way Jedi, with her candy cane light saber (pic does not do justice) and her dad, Darthy Claus. They were so excited when I asked if I could take their picture. It was pretty awesome. Last one is the trading card I was given by Dyngus Fett, aka Po'laka Mandalorian. When I was talking to he...

I made cookies.

I made cookies. I made anise ones, again, because there must be anise cookies on the holidays. Approx 3 dozen or so, no two alike! Royal icing, glitter, sprinkles, etc. And there were penguins. Nominally Little Blue Penguins (a real species) but mostly I didn't want to make multiple different colors of icing. Of course, there were regular gingerbread people, but then there were Star Wars gingerbread people. Sometimes, I make myself a challenge to see what I can do with just plain white royal icing outlines and regular gingerbread people shapes, no special cutters or anything. The Chewbaccas were an attempt at texture so they weren't just covered with unidentifiable frosting fur. Not quite as successful as I might have hoped, but you get the idea. The Princess Leias probably need bigger head buns, but are otherwise pretty ok. I'm most proud of the Storm Troopers. It took a couple experiments to get a fair approx of their armor. All of these are based on the original 1977 mo...

Most of this is not all that funny.

Most of this is not all that funny. It's cute, but ehn. However, just after 4:35 there's a bit that warmed the fuzzy cockles of my geeky heart. #nerd https://youtu.be/Sa2brpTUKNQ?t=4m35s https://youtu.be/Sa2brpTUKNQ?t=4m35s

How to serendipitously find a way to avoid your family for a significant part of the day: hear on the radio that it is Frank Lloyd Wright's 150th birthday and there are things going on. In fact, it seems there have been and will be things going on all year at virtually every FLW site there is, as well as several museums and a few other things. Around here, this week and weekend are apparently the culmination of some extended goings on. Sadly, I seem to have missed a number of occasions with free cocktails. Although, that would have been a challenge, what with the driving, and all. Today, you could wander the Darwin Martin House and complex grounds at will for $1.50. There was also cake. It was delicious. The head paper and Japanese woodblock print expert conservator for the state was doing mini-workshops in Japanese woodblock printing. I spent a long time talking with her, in fact. She's from Ottawa and trained in Japan in their methods of paper-making and print-making and foun...

Classic screwed up details in a movie for the appropriate category of nerd: In "Mrs. Doubtfire", Sally Field's character is explaining her design plans for restoring her former friend/boyfriend Pierce Brosnan's new Mansion/B&B and talks about how she was thinking of putting a "17th century grand piano" in the music room styled lobby inspired by the French Second Empire. Even assuming what she's doing is mixing details from different periods, there's one problem. The piano, in any form, was only invented around 1700. The earliest form you might call a grand piano was probably late 1700's, but what we'd all recognize was definitely an 1800's kinda thing. So she could have meant an 18th century grand piano, but I'm betting it was supposed to be a 19th century one. Not to mention that would then be spot on for the Second Empire. #nerd #ruiningmovieswithfacts #detailsdetails

This cracks me up. Snarky reviews of selected Arthurian films. Like this tiny bit of comments about Merlin: (Yes, I know: he's a late addition to the legend of Arthur. He was inserted by Geoffrey of Monmouth blah blah blah shut up. He's awesome. Merlin 4ever.) Snarky, but totally useful. I may or may not have seen most of these films. #nerd #nicolwilliamson4evar http://www.npr.org/sections/monkeysee/2017/05/14/528101431/camelot-on-film-9-not-so-brief-intermittently-shining-moments http://www.npr.org/sections/monkeysee/2017/05/14/528101431/camelot-on-film-9-not-so-brief-intermittently-shining-moments
