Weird songs you hear on the radio. Ok, I don't remember ever hearing it but that doesn't mean much. It seems oddly topical, though. #throwbackthursday #americansongbook https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEULVyg1O_8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEULVyg1O_8

Inspired by a post of yourn and comments thereupon. If you don't know: 1. "All we like sheep" is one of the great choruses from Handel's Messiah . It is one of the most difficult to sing. One of the issues is making sure it doesn't come out sounding like an expression of affection for ungulates. It's a simile. (Which, for puns sake, is a completely different Handel oratorio. Music nerds unite.) 2. Once upon a time, former Monty Pythons wrote an oratorio based on "Life of Brian", called Not the Messiah (He's a Very Naughty Boy) . In which there is a movement called "We Love Sheep". 3. The cameo appearance as Shepherd is Carol Cleveland, who did a lot of work with the Pythons. You may remember her as Zoot and Dingo at Castle Anthrax. #throwbackthursday https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XghqJYBqxmg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XghqJYBqxmg

Sort of feeling this, these days. #throwbackthursday Battle Hymn of the Republic Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword: His truth is marching on. Glory, Glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! His truth is marching on. I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps, They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps; I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps: His day is marching on. Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! His day is marching on. I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel: "As ye deal with my contemners, so with you my grace shall deal"; Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel, Since God is marching on. Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glor...

Too late for #throwbackthursday but posting anyway.

Too late for #throwbackthursday but posting anyway. I don't know why I suddenly remembered this, although I'm pretty sure it has to do with Leonard Cohen and "Hallelujah". It has way too many meta touchstones, but still, it is that much more meaningful, if painful. Final chorus from Carissimi's oratorio Jepthe Translation of the words: Weep, children of Israel, weep, all ye virgins, and for Jephthah’s only daughter, lament with songs of sorrow. Fair warning, do not listen unless you find crying cathartic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PLnla_I9gQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PLnla_I9gQ
