Finally caught up with this week's Doctor Who.
Finally caught up with this week's Doctor Who. Amanda Heyen was right (I think it was you?). This episode finally was a full-blown, legit episode. And it was GOOD. Due in no small part to a cameo from whom I shall not say but how could it have been other than a-maz-ing with this person. Who was amazing.
Also? The show runners were obs totally aware of something I complained about if you read the spoilery parts of some of my comments on prior episodes this season. And they made great use and effect of dealing with it with humor. In fact, humor was all over this episode in the best possible ways.
If you've been avoiding this season, this would be the episode to start with because it is the best so far. I'm not sure the official reviewers agree entirely, but I'm not sure they would tolerate most of the old (pre-Eccleston) episodes, so there's that.
I'm also wondering if any of them have watched much of the old Who, where there were frequently several companions at the same time and you could hardly accuse them of a lot of character development for all of them. Because there's been a lot of complaining about that. As if you can't write just one companion poorly (gods save us from Peri).

Awful didn't mean what it now means in the 1500/1600s. That is all.
Based on all the episodes prior to this one, I was ready to give up. I hated Moffat, but he was never dull. At worst, I was entertained by how much I hated his version of the show. This new showrunner has been dishing up plain porridge every episode and I couldn't summon up any enthusiasm anymore.
ReplyDeleteThen this episode came along and...I fell asleep (not because of the episode itself, but because I was just super tired that evening) and I haven't gotten around to watching it properly yet. I've heard good things.
It's not Moffat, for sure. I guess after so many years of him, though, it's hard to recreate everything out of whole cloth. I have hopes.
ReplyDeleteWe had to pause the show and all but run around when the cameo came on. This episode in particular is one that I really wish I could talk about in person because there's just too many things to talk about and putting in spoiler space for every response in a discussion is just too much work for me today.
