It's "like polio" because they have found no polio virus in any of the patients. Otherwise, it is clinically very similar. So it paralyzes, but they haven't figured out a specific single cause that links every single case.

Benjamin Greenberg, a neurologist who has treated children with AFM at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, said AFM is “exquisitely rare.” But, if their child is diagnosed, parents should prepare for extensive physical therapy — therapy that isn’t always covered by insurance, he said. Some children paralyzed by AFM have eventually regained their ability to walk, but need time.

And why would it be that therapy is not covered? Because that means short of a new Sister Kenny in Minneapolis or Franklin Roosevelt's Warm Springs facility that provides rehab for free, you can guarantee that there will be permanently disabled children, just like from polio. Maybe that would get Mitch McConnell to reconsider national health insurance or the ACA. What with the charitably funded Warm Springs being why he can walk in spite of polio.

Or maybe we can just appeal to the GOP on the basis of the public cost of having people left disabled over their lifetime, rather than investing in proper care so they can recover. You know, it's amazing how you can make everything political.
