Much of my dad's care has been excellent, especially from the nurses, but boy can I see why people feel ignored and dismissed by the medical system. And it's utter bullshit that at an inpatient facility services are curtailed on the weekend and nobody can give a diagnosis and therefore specifically appropriate treatment for something. Let's just let something get worse until we have to call hospice in the middle of the night. Which we did last night.

I have many frustrations. There is a small possibility that we are now at risk of having the house colonized with a resistant bacterium. Ok. It could be controlled with appropriate cleaning and hand washing if we get a jump on it. But that means old fashioned bleach and that damages a lot of the fancy new surfaces that they use to decorate bathrooms and kitchens. Which my mom is conflicted about and this one I understand.

The one thing they saved up money for was to remodel those rooms after we were all out of the house and on our own. To have to damage them to protect not just my dad but my mom and all of us is an upsetting prospect and there is no money to replace anything damaged.

At the end of the day, though, damaged surfaces are less of a problem than untreatable infections. So I'll try and give her a little time but otherwise a smart choice would be to be over careful, which means bleach, now. Of course, we may never know because doing cultures may not be considered hospice care (comfort versus treatment). That is one potential fail in hospice. But I would argue that is even more reason for bleach now, questions later.

P.S. This started in the hospital.
P.P.S. They just kept waiting for consults that weren't going to happen on the weekend.
P.P.P.S. No surprise that a patient would not think much of their care if they got worse in the hospital and nobody did anything just because it was the weekend.
P.P.P.P.S. He was admitted for suspected infection. Which remains unidentified. I submit that this is a process which needs improvement.

  1. Arrgh. Would the mild bleach solution in Clorox Any Surface suffice, or do you need the big guns at this point?

  2. And mom wants to know why the Clorox wipes don't count. I explain that the disinfectant in those is not bleach. Well why doesn't that work? It says it covers [reads label of bacteria covered]! None of those are MRSA. Well I still don't see why ... etc.

It's really hard not to look at her and say I don't give a damn what you do or don't understand. You have the incredible luxury of your own personal medical consultant and this is just the way it is. You don't have to like it, you just have to do it.

  3. F-L Silver , you should just say that. Or maybe have one of the hospice people do it.
