I know it would be too much of a stretch for the people who run our government, right now, but this is why what happens with the Kavanaugh confirmation matters. It doesn't have to be logical, we're talking about human behavior, after all. Unwanted contact is violence, sexual assault is violence, rape is violence.
And we ignore it because it supposedly only happens to/by people we can 'other', but women are killed in this country every day because our culture continues to make it very clear that a woman is less valuable than a man, that her only value is in direct proportion to the sexual utility any given man decides she has. It is not the same as other murders because somehow the woman must have some responsibility or fault for what happened to her, she needed to be taught a lesson, etc.
This is not just something 'those backward foreigners' do. That's why it matters that a swimmer from Stanford is held responsible, that a preppie from DC is held responsible. That the entire culture that grins, and winks, and protects its own is held responsible. Whipping your penis out should not be the measure of a man, and it certainly shouldn't be how we measure the value of a woman.
