The US isn't the only country with issues. It's interesting how recently the statue was erected (1982). He died in 1891 while still in office. That's a long time gap. While it's pretty recently that his leading role in establishing residential schools has been discussed, it's still notable that this isn't an old statue from way back when. Then again, there's hardly anybody who is more significant in Canadian history. It'd be kind of like removing a statue of Washington or Jefferson.
