I'm gonna state the obvious question: how much of this had to do with her being female and black?

She is incredibly lucky she didn't develop something that killed her.

  1. "Find a doctor that you can have a good relationship with," she said, "and never be afraid to get a second opinion. We won't be offended."

Bullshit. In my - and many chronic patients - experience, many doctors will consider you a hypochondriac, or a sign that you're pill shopping, if you get 2nd or 3rd opinions. What Pollyanna state is that PA living in?

  2. I have always maintained and behaved that way. It's what I was taught and regardless would have believed was the correct thing. It's also been the way any healthcare provider I thought was any good has treated me as a patient.

That said, I have been dismissed as an hysterical woman in an acute, life-threatening situation, and I know people who have been sent legal letters dismissing them from a practice because they kept asking questions when their medical situation was not being addressed and because they sought other input.

So what I would say about that quote is that it is sincere and coming from someone who would behave that way, and that the definition of good relationship is someone who will not dismiss you and who will not be upset about you seeking a second opinion.

Other than personal recommendations from people you know, I don't have any cogent suggestions as to how people find those care providers, though.

  3. I use Yelp and review sites if I don't have any personal recommendations, then double-check the dr's via the state's medical registry to make sure that they don't have any actions against them.
