First, why report on this at all? When he dies, and when the memorial is held, fine. Then it will be perfectly reasonable to discuss who will or will not attend or speak. It's vulgar and offensive to start gloating over his and his family's misery and use it as another ping-pong ball.
Second, let the man and his family have this time to themselves. Gloating over his and his family's misery is indecent. Yes, this is gloating. It's using it to try and schadenfreude another dig at Trump. Which means you don't give a damn about McCain, but you do about making sure everyone knows you hate Trump. That's incredibly high on the vulgar and offensive scale.
Third, this should not even be much news. McCain was a prisoner of war and Trump trumped all over him. I wouldn't invite that person to my funeral, either.
Fourth, I wouldn't invite Trump to anything. The only reason he shows up is to make it about him and [see number two] this is NOT about him. Try not helping Trump make this about Trump. Think you could grasp that concept? He will provide you many more headlines; you can miss this one.
Fifth, you have nothing good, or complementary, or historic, never mind vaguely supportive, to say about McCain? Nothing? Not a thing? The only thing you can think of is ha ha, he snubbed Trump? You really think that's the appropriate deathwatch you want to publish?
Last, yes, he might have asked for Pence instead. Because he probably still thinks he deserves the respect and courtesy of the attendance of the executive branch. Just not the abusive person who attacked him. In fact, by the usual standards, it's probably correct to say McCain earned the respect and courtesy of the attendance of the executive branch.
Please try not to get so caught up in the contest to point out indecency that you forget to be humane and decent.
